How do they get next day ratings?

I know there are paranoid people out there that pee themselves over the thought that cable boxes and dish boxes could transmit info on what they watch. So how do networks know how many people watched a certain show by the next day? For example, the day after the Oscars or Superbowl, they announce how many million people watched it. How do they get this number? It sure isn't through those neilson mail in things. I've never heard of networks calling millions of people at 1am to ask what they watched. Do they just pull this # out of their butts? If so, what's to stop Wheel of Fortune to announce that last night's Wheel had 200 Million viewers and later say Oops, it was less! (but the announcement was made so it can't be taken back)?

The networks must be monitoring what is being watched but not telling us. Now is the time for all the paranoid people to change their pants since "Big Brother" is watching. Mwaahahahha!!!!

there are a few homes that have "people meter boxes" and that counts for everyone in america, so blame them for "suposingly" nobody watching arrested development.

I asked a ratings question in here the other day, it got fairly in depth. You should check it out.
