Night Stalker "Pilot" 09-29-05

Episode Title: "Pilot"

Spoiler:
Carl Kolchak takes a job at the L.A. Beacon as a crime reporter and begins investigating a strange case in which a pregnant woman has gone missing. When her body is found fingers point to the woman's husband, but Kolchak believes in the man's innocence, believing that there is a supernatural angle to the story. His investigations are frustrated when Perri Reed, the newspaper's senior crime reporter, digs into Kolchak's mysterious past.

I hope it doesn't because the hype I have heard has all been negative.

Reviews have been mixed. I've been anticipating this though.

I'm one that has been negative on this. Bad effects, uninteresting mythology, and absolutely zero chemistry between the characters. Perhaps I'll take a look and see if they've changed anything from the advance pilot, which I found to be nothing other than horrid.

Thanks Riley. According to that link it appears the ending of this was reshot. Still, they'd have to have changed quite a bit from the earlier version to redeem this one.

I'll watch, but I still think Kolchak should be more grizzle and less pretty boy.

I thought it was fine. My wife thought it was creepy which is a good sign since nothing ever creeps her out.

It is missing the humor of the original and the quirkiness of the main character, which I guess would not play as well nowadays.

I liked the two nods that I saw to the original character.
Spoiler:
They digitally put in the original Kolchak in a quick scene which was nice and not too terribly done (parts of Star Wars looked worse) I personally liked how they put Kolchak's hat on the hat rack. Nice little touch. And didn't the original Kolchak have a shredded Gumby hanging from his rearview mirror as well?

Sums it up pretty well. Its a bad sign when your rooting for the lead characters to get killed by the monster.

Kind of weird to not even find out what the actual coyote things were. No explanation other than they can't explain it? Still, I'll stay tuned in. The guy reminded me of the cop from Vampire: The Masquerade.

Fine show aside from 2 things. 1. Appears like it could be like Supernatural with a few differences. 2. Gabrielle Union.

We must get a telethon in order to hire a hitman to get her killed. Before she tries to act again.

Oh and I didn't like how they couldn't call him anything else aside from Kolchak. I'm sure he has 2 names, and this one doesn't exactly roll well.

I think the show has potential. I liked the nods to the original. My only gripe with the show is the casting of Stuart Townsend -- I don't see him as Kolchak.

I was looking forward to this one, but have no desire to watch another episode after last night's.

The last half of the episode was pretty bad, imo--especially the end, in the cave.

It's on the bubble for me; it'll get another episode or three before I make up my mind. It competes with CSI, which I still like, but that's why they make PVRs.

Just watched this tonight. It was terrible. Boring and totally uninteresting.

Another show for the "dropped" list.

I absolutely loved Kolchak as a kid, even bought all of the Columbia House VHS tapes.

I SO wanted to like this update.

It stank, in a big way. The driving into the cave sequence was laughable.

I'll watch a couple more just for old times sake, but I don't think it is repairable.

The original series comes out on DVD next Tuesday, right?

i do not understand why so many people hated this show, it was not bad at all, creepy, similar to xfiles. I hope they do not cancel it.

Yes it does! Got a copy awaiting me already.

I can now cross one more "when will_____ be coming out on DVD" show off my list, and another later this month when American Gothic is released.
