How about because reality shows are cheap to make and despite the prevailing sentiment here they are popular for the most part. I'm not ashamed to admit that I love reality TV.

I look foward to then next Survivor season, I don't know what I'd do without Big Brother on the Summer TV Schedule, I'll watch Amaxing Race even though it's the creappy "Family Edition". I'm a reality whore.

I can see your point here. The phony moments tend to stick out like a sore thumb. The Casino, Tommy Lee goes to College, and The Simple Life are among the worst for this. Hell, I almost don't care if it's fake or not, as long as I can't see the fake moments. But it's always rather obvious and ruins any suspension of belief.
