Rome - "How Titus Pullo Brought Down the Republic" - 9/04

How Titus Pullo Brought Down the Republic

Spoiler:
Anointed People's Tribune by Caesar, Mark Antony returns to Rome with Octavian's liberators, Vorenus and Pullo. After being feted by a grateful Atia, Vorenus heads home to his family for the first time in eight years, while Pullo heads for the brothels. Shocked to see a husband she thought was dead, Vorenus' wife, Niobe, presents him with a family he barely recognizes. After the Senate rebuffs Caesar's "compromise" for a heroic return to Rome, Antony learns that Pompey has drafted an ultimatum stripping the general of his power. With tempers on both sides reaching a boiling point, unfinished business involving Pullo spawns a Forum melee that all but ensures an unhappy outcome in the Pompey-Caesar standoff - and sends Pullo and an injured Vorenus back into Caesar's ranks.

A note for any that are interested. History channel is showing a special on Rome. I think it is on Monday 9pm (est)....

RoboCop in Rome!
Peter Weller loves his real-life role as a scholar

Tomorrow night at 9, actor Peter Weller will appear at the Colosseum and other monuments of ancient Rome in the History Channel documentary "Rome: Engineering an Empire." The former RoboCop is one of the experts sharing his knowledge in this superb two-hour companion piece to the current HBO miniseries "Rome."

I really enjoyed the first episode of this show, maybe it was the gratuitous sex scene I dunno.

I’ll definitely have my MythTV box set to record this show from now on.

This is prolly as close as I'm gonna get to A Song of Ice and Fire.....well you know minus the magic and dragons.

Good stuff. Pullo is really growing on me and Vorenus aint bad either.

I think I'm going to get hooked on this show. I agree that the surgery was pretty sick, but I enjoyed the scene before that with the gambling in the bar. I guess cheating didn't pay off in Rome either.

Really good, but a lot of these actors seem way too British. I wish the accents were closer to that one slave (who was watching after Marc Antony), which sounded more Italian. Also, a lot of British phrases thrown around, like bloody and penny.

In the last thread someone said Rome really kicks into high gear in the fourth episode. I thought it did in the second. I'm hooked.

That's what I thought too. The pilot was good, but obviously was just setting things up, things just took off in this episode.

movielib - are things that have happened so far historically accurate?

I have no problem with the British accents(maybe I am used to my Roman dramas with English accents), if they are not going to speak Latin, then they do not need to sound like the Mario brothers and talk with bad Italian accents and/or broken English.

I think so, pretty much for the historical characters. Although Colleen McCullough, in her Masters of Rome historical novel series portrays Marc Antony as more of a brutish thug type. Of course the two soldiers are fictional (although mentioned by Caesar in his writings I think he didn't say much about them). Certainly it is embellished (I don't think Octavian was captured as they showed) and no one knows all those conversations and intricate details of daily lives. But I think it's broadly accurate and the historical figures are portrayed well. Cato, for example, is just as I always pictured him.

It's not so much the accents as all the British slang (Brutus sounds more like Hugh Grant to me than a young Roman full of inner turmoil). I don't care if it's in Latin, but I'd be more willing to believe an Italian accent is closer to the original Roman than a cockney.

I did enjoy this episode much more than the first. Poor Pullo...the guy just wanted some drink, some women and a bit of gambling. Where's the harm in that

If you have HBO on demand next weeks episode is available. I don't know if it's up all week or just for today.

FYI, Episode 3 (i.e. next week's episode) is already available on Comcast InDemand for some reason. Just watched it.

InDemand also has an "extra" for each of the first 3 episodes--namely, a 3-4 minute director's/writer's commentary on a particular scene from each. The one for episode 3 touches a bit on the historical accuracy and admits that some things were sacrificed for the sake of visual effect (e.g. they acknowledged that Caesar wouldn't have been riding in front of his army) and safety (e.g. they noted that they know that Romans didn't have saddles with stirrups). It also points out the significance of the final scene of the episode for those who may not be familiar with the history of Rome:
Spoiler:
the scene with Titus finding a wagon full of gold from the Roman treasury is their answer to why Pompei apparently left Rome without it and couldn't pay his troops.

One thing has been nagging at me a little. I've always thought Pompey is pronounced Pom-pee with the accent on the first syllable. Although the show has been inconsistent, mostly they've pronounced it Pom-pay. Now Pompeii was one of the Roman cities destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE and is pronounced more like they're pronouncing Pompey's name.

Anyway, Merriam-Webster agree with me:

It is times like these that I really wish I still had HBO. I cancelled it the same week that Carnivale' season 2 started. I picked up the free disc with the first episode of Rome on it at Best Buy last week and was immediately hooked! Hopefully it won't be a long wait till the dvds come out. Now someone correct me If I am wrong...this is a full fledged series and not a mini-series correct?

Take care all!!

Enjoyed the second episode immensely. I'm also hooked. Will give me something new to watch on Sunday nights now that Entourage is over.

I was under the impression it was a 12 episode maxi-series.

Episode 2 was more interesting than the pilot, but I'm a long way from being "hooked".

I am hooked as well.

The political intrigue has won me over.

Although, I would have preferred this as a mini-series in two hour segments.

I just get into the story and am pulled out again for a week.

Hour is too short for this kind of narrative.
