I could have done without the last three seconds, but overall I agree with you. :p

I just watched the episode "Safe" and I really thought that this was one of the better ones delving into the characters a bit more. Love the end scene between The Captain and Simon.

RogueScribner 08-16-05 02:05 PM

"Out of Gas," "Ariel," "War Stories," "Trash," and "Objects in Space" represent the pinnacle of the series, IMO. They were all good, however. I don't think there's an episode I didn't like.

Groucho 08-16-05 02:07 PM

I enjoyed the fourth episode a lot more than any of the three the three pilot episodes. Well done, even though the "ghost ship" storyline is anything but original.

Well I just finished up the 3rd disc (I couldnt wait for the other discs to come in from Netflix or watch on Fridays on sci fi since that is the reason I didnt watch it the first time around so just went out at bought it on DVD) and I have been converted to a huge fan. Actually my wife as well, who hates just about anything like this. We are now sad that we only have 3 more episodes to watch. At least it has giving us something to look forward in terms of movies now, since the horizon was looking pretty bleak for a while.

Well, since the topic of getting into the show is still going, I figured I'd throw my 2¢ in. The first time I heard of Firefly was in an entertainment newsletter I used to get, and there were campaigns going on to save it every issue. I thought it odd, but didn't look into it at all. Over time, I kept hearing about the show, and how great it was. Then one day wandering around a store, I saw the DVDs on sale, and figured what the hell.

I don't remember how long it took me to get to watching it, but I sat down and saw the first episode. I fall in the camp of I don't need everything explained right up front, and I don't expect to understand everything from one episode. With that said, I thought it was a decent show, and the little feel-good line at the end about barely flying left a positive feeling in me. So what next, but "Train Job". By time that episode was done (by the way, on DVD there is no Book intro, nor Mal intro for later episodes) I was totally in love with the show, and it just got bigger from there.

Out of the 10 people I've personally shown Firefly to, 9 either really liked it or loved it. And so far we've got a group of about 15 going to see Serenity opening night.

This all coming from a person who never saw Buffy or Angel or even heard of Joss Whedon before picking up the DVDs.

Phineas444 08-17-05 02:05 PM

After seeing the screening of Serenity in St. Louis I would have to agree the movie ended perfectly. Sequels...even though they could..bah...

rkndkn 08-17-05 04:23 PM

I have just started watching the boxset of "Firefly". When it originally aired, it kind of bypassed my radar, and I wasn't too intrigued by the ads I saw. I decided to start the boxset now so I could be all ready for "Serenity". (I'm kind of glad I'm viewing it in the intended order on the set, rather than the haphazard original airing dates.)

I've watched the first 3 episodes and am really enjoying it so far. I don't watch much sci-fi, so the whole milieu is a nice change, and I'm enjoying the humorous dialogue in it.

kenage 08-17-05 07:00 PM

I am kind of doing the same thing rkndkn. I am watching the show on the SciFi channel and loving it. I really wish I had watched this sooner.

Well, I hope you have checked Buffy and Angel out now. You gotta watch those.
I watched one episode when it was on and I didn't care for it but then again it wasn't the original Pilot either. After it was cancelled I heard all the kudos but was still reluctant to buy the DVD because I didn't think I would get into it but it was a Joss written show which always kept interest up in the back of my mind.
So then Sci Fi started airing it and I watched it and I enjoyed it. Didn't love it but enjoyed it so seeing that I will be out of the country for a few weeks just bought the DVDs so I have been watching one a every night. It's true what people say that it takes a few episodes to hook you and I am just that, Hooked. Once they got the comraderie going and started exploring the characters I fell in love. I just finished Jaynestown and I can really understand now what all the fuss is about. Only trouble is I don't have anyone to talk to about since I know no one that watches it so I am glad this board came about.

Looking forward to September 30.

Actually... I haven't. I was very tempted when Buffy season one was really cheap. I think part of it is I'm afraid to get hooked on another TV show as I have many seasons sitting unwatched on my shelf still. And I hear a lot of good things about Angel as well. I'm sure one day I'll be sitting down with one or the other.

Do what I did, go recruit some Browncoats! I lent my first disc out to a friend, and he now loves it, and through him, there are at least six more people who never saw the show who love it also.

Rypro 525 08-18-05 09:39 AM

or you can wait a few months and get the complete buff series (what i am doing) for 149.99 at most internet websites.

cajun_junky 08-18-05 01:15 PM

The worst thing about this series is that it ends. I almost don't want to continue watching it, knowing there is no second season.

Nice to see you here, kenage! I forgot if I told you my name here, but this is EPlay from elsewhere. :)

And, based on what I've seen of "Firefly", Serenity is not sci-fi.

Scifi/skiffy/sf/space opera/futuristic western . . . whatever it is, I like it.

Now as soon as they explain that goofy language they bust into every once and a while, I'll be content. :)

The first time I saw the pilot, I think I re-watched the end of the initial war scene 3 or 4 times before I figured out what was happening. I didn't make the connection between Mal/Zoe from the war and them wearing the spacesuits. The end of the war scene sort of hinted that they possibly didn't survive the bombings.

But the goofy language that they use for expletives/curses/emphasis is actually Mandarin Chinese. Mal butchers the pronunciation quite a bit, but some of it is actually comprehensible. Inara actually does the best job IMO of doing the pronunciation. I think the premise was that in the 'verse, the Chinese & Americans were the world powers so the languages between the two had sort of mixed together. Some of the Firefly fansites have the complete Chinese dialogue & translation for each one of the episodes.

I just ordered the DVD set from DDD after having rented it from BB Online. That's definitely one series I want to support!! To my surprise, my wife got hooked on the series & was even more excited than I was to watch it every night.

If you're a sci-fi nerd, this is true.

If you're Average Joe Moviegoer, Star Wars is sci-fi. Hell, if you're Average Joe Moviegoer, Tron is sci-fi.

Groucho -- what's not sci-fi about Firefly?

Hmm, wouldn't Tron be scifi also? It is an examination of the implications of AI and technological dependence.

Boy am I enjoying this show. I have two episodes to go. Love it!

Edit: Finished Objects in Space last night. Wow. I'm officially bummed that the show is over. As the episodes went on the cast gelled and the writting became bettter and better. What a tragedy that it was cancelled. I know most people are over the shock of it being gone but mine is just beginning. I eagerly await the movie.
