"Firefly" has been picked up by the Sci Fi Channel...

http://www.scifi.com/events/event.php3?event_id=11282

They'll be playing the old episodes (including the unaired ones) up until the release of Serenity. Great news for Joss Whedon fans!!

EDIT: Oops...jumped the gun a bit and misread the news release. Looks like the unaired ones ARE the "new" ones. Here's hoping it does well enough that they DO make some new ones. Though I imagine Fox has some sort of lock on that.

good news! however, i don't see the confirmation for it being picked up for new episodes. is this elsewher?

calhoun07 06-16-05 01:20 AM

Don't tease us by saying the series will continue without a proper link!

DeputyDave 06-16-05 01:59 AM

And the award for the biggest cock tease of the year goes to...

Jackskeleton 06-16-05 05:44 AM

This really should help bringing folks up to date to the story before the film. But I wouldn't be hoping for any ongoing series anytime soon. Atleast not till Universal sees some box office numbers

elektra 06-16-05 06:09 AM

I can always hope. And maybe if the losers at fox had not aired the shows out of order, it would still be on.

movieking 06-16-05 06:41 AM

I heard about this earlier, so I knew there would be no new episodes, but it doesn't make it hurt any less :(

Matthew Chmiel 06-16-05 11:44 AM

Sci-Fi only has the rights to air the episodes. That's it. The plan is to air all 14 episodes before the release of Serenity in September.

As I mentioned in the Serenity thread: there's a bigger chance that a busload of supermodels will come to my house and fuck me before we ever see new episodes of Firefly. The television show has been over and done with. If Serenity does well, we will get movie sequels, not a continuation of the series.

Considering the way this franchise absolutely refuses to die, I'd keep a bottle of lube on hand just in case.

calhoun07 06-16-05 12:29 PM

What else are the actors doing? Why couldn't it be picked up for a new series? Did we ever think Battlestar Galactica would kick ass in a new series? I recall reading post after post after post pre-BG about how much that series would suck and never work, and now it's the golden child of the Sci-Fi network.

I hope the movie performs well. I am not sure how huge the fan base is that has followed the show from it's days on Fox and how many more fans it has gained on DVD, but I do know that when I saw the trailer last night at Batman Begins and they put on the screen "From Joss Whedon creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel" there was a group of guys sitting behind me commenting that they were interested but now they weren't. I think for the majority of movie goers this is a new thing, not the continuation of a cancelled potential franchise. This movie, for the most part, will have to stand on it's own to be successful.

'Firefly' spreading wings
Sci Fi snatches up Whedon's canceled Fox show

By JOHN DEMPSEY

'Firefly' has produced its own glow in ancillary markets.

For a busted TV series that the Fox Network canceled back in December 2002 after only 11 episodes, JossWhedon's "Firefly" is building up quite a profile in ancillary markets.

The Sci Fi Channel has bought exclusive cable rights to "Firefly" from Twentieth TV for a total license fee of about $450,000 in a deal that includes three episodes Fox never ran.

The cable sale arrives a year after Universal Pictures signed a deal to produce "Serenity," a theatrical movie version of "Firefly," to be written and directed by Whedon. (Serenity is the name of the spaceship on the show.) Universal plans to put "Serenity" in theaters in September.

Beginning July 22, Sci Fi will air reruns of "Firefly" in the high-visibility Friday at 7 p.m. timeslot, which leads into the net's successful block of scripted series: "Stargate SG-1," "Stargate Atlantis" and "Battlestar Galactica."

Whedon was co-exec producer of "Firefly" with Tim Minear. Gareth Davies was producer.

Date in print: Wed., Jun. 15, 2005, Los Angeles
So nothing specific about new episodes. $450K seems kinda low. That's $30K an hour. New episodes would be >$1M per hour to produce.

No excuses now for people to not watch this wonderful show... well, unless you aren't a fan of sci-fi and don't have cable. And with Star Wars and Star Trek pretty much out of the picture, SERENITY should do pretty well in filling that sci-fi fix.

Except that Friday at 7 is kinda early. They should also run it later on Tuesday with the Stargate/BSG rerun.

Did you want to pick out which ones or should I? ;)

Fox had cancelled Family Guy and it was off for a while and now it's back on. We can say it may not be likely but possible?

I have an excuse, well two really. I own the set on DVD and I don’t have cable, I have satellite.

This Firefly movie will be the first movie I will go pay and see in the past 3 years. I normally wait for the DVD release, but this movie is pulling me.

difference is that Family Guy is a marketing jack pot. Fox can really do no wrong by keeping it on the air in merchindise money alone. The amount they get for license rights on the show makes it worth bringing back. Firefly doesn't have the same appeal and wont be on every hot topic t-shirt with some witty catch phrase by a character on the show.

elektra 06-16-05 07:37 PM

Good points. Hey - Jack - look over there - boobies!!!! ;)

it's 15 episodes, i'm sure.

Firefly consists of 1 90-minute pilot and 13 45-minute episodes.

But great way to count nevertheless.

And nobody knows yet if Sci-Fi is splitting the pilot into two episodes or keeping it at it's original length.

Bump, the reruns of Firefly start tonight on SciFi

Rogue588 07-22-05 01:35 PM

Will they be advertising it as a "Sci-Fi Original Series"...?

If they have some super-secret plan to start new episodes, I wouldn't have a problem with that. ;)

eddy1985 07-22-05 06:02 PM

Its so great to see the show on tv again. even if I have seen these a dozen times :p

Hmm, weird.

For some reason, my Tivo isn't actually recording the episode right now, but is set to record the repeat next friday at 7, but not the one an hour earlier...

Anybody else's do this?

eddy1985 07-22-05 06:39 PM

I have DVR with time warner and its not acting up.

Comfort Eagle 07-22-05 11:42 PM

Its nice to see as I missed the first run on fox, but wanted to see it. Yet, i dont want to buy the dvd's.

Dmacsg1 07-22-05 11:56 PM

I have almost bought the dvd set several times since it came out. And now after seeing it tonight for the first time...I am HOOKED!! I loved the whole Old West feel to the show! SciFi and Westerns are a hard thing to merge together sucessfully and Firefly looks to be off to a good start. Fantastic eye candy on the show too!!

By the time SciFi finishes showing this show and the September release of the Serenity movie the next DDD sale will hopefully be around the corner and I will get the dvd set then!

Looking forward to a weekly thread on the episodes!!

Take care all!!

Serenity Trailer #3

From Universal's official Serenity site:

New Serenity Trailer to Debut on SciFi

Tune in to SciFi this Friday night to see the world premiere of the brand new Serenity trailer! The final domestic trailer for Serenity will premiere on the SciFi channel, Friday, July 29th between 7:45-8PM EST during the airing of "Serenity Part 2". It will have its Internet premiere shortly thereafter (more details to come) and will be in theaters in August.

Groucho 07-25-05 04:42 PM

I watched the Pilot episode. This was my first introduction to Firefly. Quite frankly, I can see why this show didn't last long. This was a very poor pilot. The whole time I kept thinking "Did I miss an episode? What are they talking about?" I felt like I was thrust into the middle of the action without a lot of explanation.

I can't help but wonder if this show's reputation is based on blind fandom of Joss Whedon, rather than its actual quality.

HOWEVER, I recognize that I haven't given this show a fair shake, so I will continue to watch. I'll also admit that I'm intrigued by a lot of it, and I enjoy the blending of genres (even though it's been done before).

Barry Woodward 07-25-05 05:15 PM

The full pilot will air this Friday on SciFi starting at 6 PM EST.

Shady12 07-25-05 05:17 PM

To answer the question on whether the rep is based on blind fandom of Whedon, I don't like any of Whedon's other stuff AT ALL. But I LOVE Firefly. I loved the pilot but after that while I LIKED the show it took a few episodes for mte to start LOVING it.

That's good to know. I hate it when they break up stuff like that. Same thing happened with ABC and the premiere of "Lost."

cajun_junky 07-25-05 08:46 PM

I DVR'ed Part 1 this past friday since I thought they were only showing part 2 this coming friday (29th). I wanted to watch it without having to wait a week. Oh well, I guess I can delete the first part 1 and watch part 1 and 2 together this coming friday. I hope this show is as good as everyone says. My friday evening is filling up fast and I am loving it.
