Bump, the reruns of Firefly start tonight on SciFi

Will they be advertising it as a "Sci-Fi Original Series"...?

If they have some super-secret plan to start new episodes, I wouldn't have a problem with that. ;)

Its so great to see the show on tv again. even if I have seen these a dozen times :p

Hmm, weird.

For some reason, my Tivo isn't actually recording the episode right now, but is set to record the repeat next friday at 7, but not the one an hour earlier...

Anybody else's do this?

I have DVR with time warner and its not acting up.

Its nice to see as I missed the first run on fox, but wanted to see it. Yet, i dont want to buy the dvd's.

I have almost bought the dvd set several times since it came out. And now after seeing it tonight for the first time...I am HOOKED!! I loved the whole Old West feel to the show! SciFi and Westerns are a hard thing to merge together sucessfully and Firefly looks to be off to a good start. Fantastic eye candy on the show too!!

By the time SciFi finishes showing this show and the September release of the Serenity movie the next DDD sale will hopefully be around the corner and I will get the dvd set then!

Looking forward to a weekly thread on the episodes!!

I watched the Pilot episode. This was my first introduction to Firefly. Quite frankly, I can see why this show didn't last long. This was a very poor pilot. The whole time I kept thinking "Did I miss an episode? What are they talking about?" I felt like I was thrust into the middle of the action without a lot of explanation.

I can't help but wonder if this show's reputation is based on blind fandom of Joss Whedon, rather than its actual quality.

HOWEVER, I recognize that I haven't given this show a fair shake, so I will continue to watch. I'll also admit that I'm intrigued by a lot of it, and I enjoy the blending of genres (even though it's been done before).

It's worth noting that you've only seen half of the pilot. The full pilot ep is a 2-hour block.

The full pilot will air this Friday on SciFi starting at 6 PM EST.

To answer the question on whether the rep is based on blind fandom of Whedon, I don't like any of Whedon's other stuff AT ALL. But I LOVE Firefly. I loved the pilot but after that while I LIKED the show it took a few episodes for mte to start LOVING it.

That's good to know. I hate it when they break up stuff like that. Same thing happened with ABC and the premiere of "Lost."

I DVR'ed Part 1 this past friday since I thought they were only showing part 2 this coming friday (29th). I wanted to watch it without having to wait a week. Oh well, I guess I can delete the first part 1 and watch part 1 and 2 together this coming friday. I hope this show is as good as everyone says. My friday evening is filling up fast and I am loving it.

My thoughts exactly. When the show opened, we were thrust into some war. I checked my TiVo guide, thinking it recorded part 2 of the pilot. Nope.

Don't get me wrong, I was interested enough to stay tuned and am looking forward to the rest of the series, but some explanations would have been nice.

I've been renting the DVD's, I'm about 2/3's through and I sort of agree. It's a good show, definitely worth watching, but I think a lot of the praise for it is overblown. I don't know, maybe I would be more into it if I hadn't seen Cowboy Bebop first (which has the same basic premise, if not execution).

I can also see why it got cancelled, though I think it has more to do with the cost of the show and size of the cast then any quality concerns, it seems like a very expensive show to make. Lots of different sets and on-location shooting, as well as the special effects. The 9 major speaking roles probably cost them a lot too, even if they are mostly unknowns. They probably needed 'Lost'-type ratings to sustain this for a while, but it doesn't look like that happened.

I enjoy the writing, The captain is perfect for the part and the (adult) women are almost universally hot, Inara in particular. I don't really enjoy the idiot-savant-psychic-creepy girl storyline though. For a show that tries so hard to be anti-cliche, that story is sure treading some old ground.

i love this show, i dont think its overblown, when the 13 are done airing you'll wish there were more. i loved buffy and angel, but like this alot more. i like the last few episodes.

I loved it, too. I think being thrown right in was a good thing--I hate it when writers assume you need all the info right up front.

I think the biggest factor in it being cancelled was them playing episodes out of order. I believe the first episode they showed was not the pilot. If you thought that was confusing(not sure how it's confusing though), imagine showing some random episode first. I remember catching the first episode I think when it was on and I had no idea what was going on so never watched again. And I'm someone who loved it when I watched it the correct way. So basically, it had no chance.

I take it the episodes had an overall story arc instead of a bunch of single shot epsiodes? Why were the episodes shown out of order in the first place? Did FOX have some sort of an agenda to purposely kill the series?

That, my friend, is the $64K question.

It's just what they do... as they've proven time and time again.

Imagine how lost people felt when they watched the show in its original run on Fox. The network decided to start with the third episode, split the pilot in two and run those episodes last, and not run three episodes at all.

Also contributing was that they ran the show only sporadically on Friday nights, it kept getting pre-empted by baseball playoffs. And it didn't help that it got some bad reviews -- the biggest complaint being that it seemed to be an incoherent mess.

But the beating it took in the press probably was because what the critics saw, the first ep that aired, was The Train Job (actually, the second episode, not the third). It was an ep that Whedon and Minear wrote hurriedly over a weekend because Fox rejected the pilot -- the Fox suits complained that the pilot was too slow and didn't have enough action. So Whedon-Minear had to rush out an action-packed episode (The Train Job) to make the Fox suits happy. And in hindsight, it was one of the weaker episodes. If you watch The Train Job with the perspective that this was the first thing the public saw, it's easy to see how the critics and viewers could be confused.

Fox eventually did air the pilot, but it was the last episode that aired before the series was cancelled.

Word is that Fox didn't like the show at all. They thought they were going to get a light, fluffy reworking of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and instead they got this. They had no idea what it was or what to do with it, so they shoved it aside until they found something else to replace it (I don't remember what that was).
