Burton Cromer—vice president of BBC Direct, which is releasing the first season of the British SF series Doctor Who on DVD—told SCI FI Wire that the BBC made the unusual decision to release the DVD in the United States before the show had found a broadcast outlet there. But he added that the show will find its way onto American TV, one way or another.

"It will be going on television," Cromer said in an interview. "There're lots of discussions going on, and I can't really talk about that. This is a unique situation, really, because there are so many fans of Doctor Who ... already out there, and we were just finding [that] people were getting ... second-hand copies or copies from the U.K. ... We really wanted fans to get the best, most complete version in the United States as [soon as] we possibly could. So we made the decision, and it is unique, to go ahead of the TV broadcast with the DVD and to release the gift set of the DVD basically within two and a half to three months [after] the U.K. [version]."

Since its premiere earlier this year, the updated Doctor Who has been a smash hit in Great Britain, and U.S. fans have been clamoring for a way to see the series legally stateside. There's no downside to a U.S. DVD release, even if the show has yet to be seen on American TV, Cromer added. "The good news for us is that we already have that loyal fan base, but then when the show does broadcast in the U.S., we'll have a whole new fan base, because it's just a new Doctor Who: very exciting, but still the great stories and as great as the old Doctor Who," he said.

Doctor Who is gearing up production of its second season in the United Kingdom, which will appear next year. A special Christmas episode, meanwhile, will air this month. The U.S. DVD will feature the entire first season of Doctor Who, starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. It hits stores on Feb. 14, 2006.

It sounds like to me (and maybe I'm completely wrong) that maybe whatever US cable channels are looking into airing Doctor Who are waiting for 2 seasons so they can get the amount of episodes that is more normal for a US series. 13 episodes from Season 1 + 14 from Season 2 = 27 episodes.

I doubt it, since the cable channels most likely to air it (like USA/Sci Fi and such) air many 13 ep seasons for other shows. I think it boils down to not a lot of interest due to mainstream people rarely being interested in or "getting" british tv.

SciFi just picked up reruns of the new Night Stalker series with a grand total of 9 episodes for the entire run. I don't think episode numbers have nearly as much to do with these decisions as it used to.

I still don't understand why BBC America doesn't show it. As I understand it, the channel isn't officially affiliated with the BBC (because of the way it's funded) so they have to bid for programming like PBS, etc- but no one else seems interested in showing the new series.

I just finished watching the last ep of the first series last night. And then watched the Children in Need Special. I'm very much looking forward to the Christmas Invasion episode. I hope that the new Doctor can live up to expectations. (I've tried to avoid spoilers.)

And, yes, although I downloaded all of the episodes, I will gladly buy the R1 set when it is released on 14 February. (I held off buying the R2 set mainly because of the packaging.)

I just finished watching the Christmas Invasion. I thought it was a very good episode and there was not nearly as much schmaltz as I had feared. In fact, I would say it was a fairly "serious" episode in a number of respects.

The subject of
Spoiler:
Torchwood
comes up in the episode, but not much real information is revealed.

I thought the coolest part of the episode was a small moment where the Doctor refers to
Spoiler:
Arthur Dent
as "a nice man", implying that the two characters exist in the same "universe" and may have met at some point.

For anyone wishing to avoid spoilers when viewing the episode there is a second season teaser with clips from a number of episodes that is between the end of the episode and the credits.

How do you make a doctor who special with a New Doctor and only give him a short amount of screen time?

The HHGtG reference was pretty kick ass though.

Rats. Amazon.co.uk has the 12" remote controlled dalek in stock, but won't dispatch toys to the US. Now I need to find someone in the UK who won't charge me fifty quid for it. Or...I guess I could wait until summer. The girlfriend and I are tentatively planning to go to London.

I too have just finished watching "The Christmas Invasion" and I like Tennant already. Several points I've highlighted *Possible Spoilers*:

            *
            Spoiler:
Did any of you think Harriet Jones did the right thing in ordering the destruction of the Sycoraxic mother ship, even though the alien invaders had surrendered and were leaving Earth after the Doctor defeated their chieftain in a duel? In many ways I felt that the Doctor had every right to feel appalled and disgusted with Harriet Jone's unethical decision in dealing with the Sycoraxic menace; the Doctor had solved the problem of the Sycoraxic invasion with little blood spilled, the Sycoraxic were keeping their honour true and were leaving Earth never to trouble that planet again, then out of nowhere PM Jones orders the retreating Sycoraxic ship to be blown out of the sky anyway. All that hard work by the Doctor to prevent a massacre for nothing. I felt the Doctor had every right to be pissed off at that act of genocide.

But then again Harriet Jones perhaps did the right thing and the Doctor was being hopelessly naive in this case. Maybe Harriet Jones was just being a ruthless pragmatist in protecting the Earth. The Sycoraxic did invade Earth first with the malicious intention of plundering it's resources and selling all the humans into slavery, then through "blood control" they held up 2 billion people hostage. To make things worse, Harriet Jones was then kidnapped and then she watched two of her aides murdered before her eyes by these sadistic looking alien creatures. If I was in her position, I would probably do the same thing to protect Earth, even though Harriet Jones seemed to motivated by revenge or spite rather than rational thought or compassion.

And is Torchwood some kind of special division of U.N.I.T.? And the death ray Torchwood used to blast the Sycoraxic mother ship was obviously inspired by the Death Star Superlaser. They mentioned that this Torchwood death ray superweapon was reversed engineered from a crashed alien ship, a decade before. I wonder how U.N.I.T./Torchwood deployed this London sized superweapon?

I really didn't enjoy the special until the end, there were a couple of good spots, but until the Doc woke up it was really dragging. The second 20 minutes seemed to take an hour.

I recall being annoyed with the Harriet Jones character in her first episode, since I have a certain character flaw in that I don't enjoy mixing politics and entertainment, and they took it there again with a jab at Bush in this one. When I saw her in the previews I was disappointed that she looked to be becoming a reoccurring character. That said, I really liked the twist at the end. Based on her earlier appearance it appeared they were setting her up to be the liberal//idealist/pacifists wet dream of a leader and it really surprised me that they took her character in that direction.

Tennant was good, although he spoke too quickly at points. My sound system was a little messed up and/or mix was off because the score was very loud and it made his dialog in particular difficult to hear at times. He almost had me hooked with the "tell them it is defended" speech, but not quite.

It seems they must have been running out of budget near the end because the "You cut of my hand" shot was very weak. Although it was probably done mostly to avoid graphic content, having David tuck his hand in his sleeve really looked cheesy. Also, the sword fight scene wasn't shot or choreographed very well and only shooting the exterior bits from the ankles up to save FX $ was painfully obvious.

It was good to see the Doctor again, but I hope the next season is better than this individual episode.

I don't know if it's the BBC or just DW in particular, but they SUCK at spoiling the next episode. It's not really the contents, I mean a preview has to be somewhat spoilery, but the fact that they don't even wait until after the credits, you have to jump for the remote the moment you hear the DW theme music. One of my comments in earlier in the thread was about the teaser for the "The Doctor Dances" at the end of "The Empty Child", which literally 2 seconds after the cliffhanger, with several characters in sporadicly in multiple locations, shows them all perfectly safe.

Although, even that is an improvement over the classic series at times. Nearly every story that contains the Daleks plays the revelation of the Daleks as a cliffhanger moment, usually at the end of episode one, but 90% of them have Dalek in the story's title.

This was an awesome episode, started off slow, but they had to place where the characters would be and make sure they understand this is "The" Doctor.

I liked when he was looking for an outfit to wear, I think I saw Tom Baker's Scarf in the background when he was searching...

The spoilers for next season kinda ruled and kinda sucked...
            Spoiler:
            K9!

This just makes me not able to wait for Spring and the new season, looks like David Tennant will make a good Doctor, and I hope HE stays around for more than one series!

I'm going to watch this tonight. I can't wait!

            Update.
I enjoyed the show but I can see how people thought it was a bit slow with it taking almost the entire episode for him to wake up. I'm not a big fan of Rose's Mom and boyfriend so without them I tend to like the show a bit more. All and all I enjoyed it. Left me wanting more.
I'm not sure how I feel about Harriet's decision. She did what she thought was right for the planet. Millions of people were almost murdered. What was to stop them from coming back?
I enjoyed them reintroducing unit and the new dude (Adam Garcia). He could certainly feel the void left vacant by Captain Jack.
            Enjoyed the previews too.

I loved the Christmas Invasion, it has to be one of the best regeneration stories in the series history after Power of the Daleks (which was the first regeneration story from the 1st to 2nd Doctor back in 1965, it no longer exists, but anyone who's heard the surviving audio recording knows how good it is)

I didn't think it was too slow at all, but then I like the slower story telling of classic Who (go back and watch one of those 3rd Doctor seven episode stories if you want to see slow) I was against a big cast of returning characters when Doctor Who first returned, but I have grown to love the Rose's Mom and Mickey episodes and look forward to seeing more of them.

I actually agree with Harriet's decision (sorry Doc) the leader of the aliens swore to the Doctor he wouldn't attack earth and attacked him again when he turned his back, what makes us think the other aliens are going to keep their word? I can't wait to see more of Torchwood and Harriet.

I enjoyed them reintroducing unit and the new dude (Adam Garcia). He could certainly feel the void left vacant by Captain Jack.
I'm sorrry, where was Adam Garcia in this episode? I watched it twice so far and don't remember him at all.

He was part of Unit. He was beamed up to the ship with Harriet and the others. I believe that he was her assistant. I had a hard time catching him too because he looks very different on his website:

Not a bad episode. Not great but enjoyable. Story didn't feel slow to me. Tennant was decent but I'm still not use to him yet. Biggest shocker was PM Harriet's decision. Didn't see that coming at all and I really enjoyed the exchange with the Doctor aftwards. If anything, it had me drooling for both the second series AND Torchwood.

            Bring it on!

Finally finished watching this as I've been really sick for the last several days. Very good episode for a regeneration story. I think Tennant will be fabulous.... definitely has the funny, no doubt about that.

But damn.... check out the end credit previews. That was just AWESOME. Looks like it will be another terrific season. And did anyone notice that since the end credits were longer than usual, an extended version of the theme music was used..... very retro, if you know what I mean.

Yes, I did notice that. And it damn near brought a tear to my eye. It was a wonderful way to wrap up the entire X-Mas season for me (New Who, Great Previews for next year and finally, the FULL theme played through).

            Great previews!
Saw a behinds the scene special as well and an interview with D.T. on some British Talk show.
I think he will do fine.

The Dr. Who podcast stated there was a "red button" Who episode to follow the "Christmas Invasion". I guess it's a DVR thingy sorta like a multi-angle DVD feature or somesuch. Did anyone see it?

Still not seeing the series up to preorder at Amazon or any other place for that matter.
Anyone know what the delay is? I thought the release date had been set for Feb. 7th.

It's actually set for release on Feb. 14th.

And we're all tearing up our keyboards waiting for SOMEONE to put it up for pre-order. Preview copies were sent out as early as last month (as seen on TVshowsonDVD.com) so it is coming. We even have a cover.

            But still no pre-orders. Dammit!
