Joan of Arcadia 4/1/05
For a slow-going episode featuring Joan in a mock trial, the final scenes between Joan and Adam were heartbreaking and sad. Will Joan ever trust Adam again, or is it truly over between them? Joan's going to have a hard time giving her heart to another person in the foreseeable future.
Some lessons have to be learned the hard way, no matter if we know it's a bad idea, the consequences always seem so far away, but when the truth comes out, it's like it would be common sense to not want to touch the flame, but people still do it, at least once, and get burnt. Telling them not to touch the flame has no effect and it's only after getting burnt does the message sink in, but by then it's too late, the damage is done.
Joan finally sees the self-destructive side of human nature up close and personal, she pays the price of allowing another person inside her heart, it the very same vulnerability that allows humans access to the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in terms of the romantic notions of love, and the need for the foundation of trust required for it to flourish. Joan will struggle with learning to trust and to open her heart again after this unexpected turn of events.

The final scene with Joan and Adam was kind of sad, and my wife got a tad emotional (she loves this show) but I still have to put it in a bit of perspective.
They are, after all, just dopey high school kids. This is what high school kids do. As even 'God' said in the final scene on the bus, this is just part of life.

I don't even like this show all that much (usually). I do like it more when they shake things up a bit and break out of the formula some. I liked the first couple of shows this season for that reason but then they got back in their usual rut.
But I was touched by this one and how devastating it was for Joan. While a little simplistic, the "Jack" story did fit in pretty well with what was happening in the characters' lives. Also, for the rest of the season it does appear they are going to be atypical. I'm more interested again.

I enjoyed this episode. I thought that it was very powerful. EW had an article in it that claimed that this might be the last season for Joan. I want to buy the first season dvd when it comes out to help show some support for the show.

Has constance zimmer been doing anything huge on the show? I loved her as Penny on Good Morning Miami, but gave up on this show before she started guesting on it, then I check out TV tome and she's been on for quite a few episodes.

She's been teaching Helen about the Catholic faith (much to Will's bewilderment). She's punky and has probably appeared in 7-10 episodes this season.

Ah I see. Good Morning Miami was a horrible show, but I wish it could have stayed around solely for her character. Reminded me of a meaner version of Natalie from Sports Night.
