I believe shoppingbear is saying the following:

the numbers were broadcast with that same counter preceeding them. then Danielle the french chick changed the message (replacing the numbers), but the counter continued to count up.

makes sense to me, and I agree with it.

I don't know if I agree with it (yet), but i suppose i can live with the theory until we know more.

but the iterations are numbers too, so it seems unlikely (at least to me) that they would have been playing with the curse numbers because that seems like too many numbers going on and the iterations weren't mentioned with the number message. at least for now I think it seems more likely that the french woman set up the iterations when she changed the message.

Good point! Isn't it also true that the iteration numbers were in french as well as her message?

My concern with the 16 year figure is that before it was transmitting the numbers. She replaced the numbers with her message (probably keeping the iterations). They figured the 16 years from the length of the message x the number of iterations. Are we sure the messages were the same length? Maybe it's not been 16 years.

it just seems like too many numbers if the iterations were running with the other numbers. it could sound confusing (more confusing)
the program with the interations could have been something that was on the boat with the french woman

4.8... billion seconds would be 152 years. if was a 1 second message. it was a much longer message than 1 second, so i think the time frame won't work with that theory.

I have no theories on the numbers, but I have been thinking about Hurley. It seems to me that he was a patient at the psych ward, not an employee. The fact that he had just moved back in with his family and was working at a fast food joint points to that. His mother mentioned that he was gaining weight (again) which could be the product of anti-psychotic or anti-depressant medications. I'm going to go with the anti-depressants for a few reasons... he's sensitive to being called "crazy" - most depressed people don't want to be labeled as crazy because they aren't the same as people who hear voices or go on killing sprees; he would have probably run out of meds after a month on the island, yet hasn't shown signs of psychosis - however, he has shown signs of depression, especially in this episode; he's clear about having caused his family problems in the past - suicide? binge drinking (aka Hurley who hurls after too much alcohol)? depressed over the death of his father?

I'm getting a bad feeling that Hurley may be the one to die. If he is unhappy and doesn't find answers to his problems soon, perhaps he'll commit suicide on the island? Wouldn't be unexpected since he seems to think that his winning lottery numbers have caused so many other people problems that he may not want to go on.

Or maybe I'm grasping at straws. Anyone else wonder more about the Hurley character after this ep?

just wanted to chime in and say that episode was GREAT. I was down on the show for a few episodes but that episode redeemed my love for the show.
Funny story though, my friend just got a DVR and she had no idea about the last shot showing the hatch, since her DVR stopped recording right at 9. I had to tell her about it and remind her to set her DVR to record a few extra minutes just to be on the safe side.

I get this feeling too as well. The lady that he visited in Australia said that her husband also killed himself to end the bad luck.

I don't remember a tshirt with aces, but Boone has been wearing a shirt that has the number 84 written in Chinese on the front. Or more specifically, the characters are

8
10
4

Good catch. I knew what the character's represented, but forgot all about them as the numbers game came up.

All I know is 4/8 is my birfday. That *has* to be significant.

IIRC, wasn't the counter in a completely different voice? Meaning it was either the original counter (set up by whoever set up the numbers message) or it was a computer-voiced counter. If it's the original counter, that means she couldn't have changed it. Besides, why would she have had a counter going, why would she bother to reset it?

It's possible it was a computer-created counter, but it wouldn't have necessarily had to reset when Danielle changed the message. Changing the message would be easier than reseting the counter, IMHO.
