Do straight guys watch the OC?

If you do, why and give your reason.

I see it as 90210 all over again but for the new generation.

I always thought that show was gay and I can't believe Fox would do it all over again.

Drop 02-28-05 02:45 PM

Such ignorance, how do I even address the?

I'm straight and I watch the OC.

It entertains me, I like some of the characters and even relate to them. These characters may be larger then life, but they still manage to face the same problems that I do. I laugh a lot when I watch this show. If that's gay, then I really need to get a new dictionary.

Oh, and plus this show has a bevy of hot chicks.

Red Dog 02-28-05 02:47 PM

Sure. And I watched 90210. Eye candy is but one reason. Why wouldn't FOX want to do another 90210 (not that this is a carbon copy)? :hscratch: 90210 was a very successful show.

Geofferson 02-28-05 02:55 PM

I watch it because this show successfully fills the niche left empty by 90210 and is damn good at it.

Maxflier 02-28-05 03:04 PM

I was a 90210 watcher, but i don't watch the OC.Although i dont really watch much tv at all nowadays aside from a select few shows.

Isn't the OC the show Howard Sterns likes so much?

Bugg 02-28-05 03:06 PM

I don't get this question at all.

I could understand a wee bit more if you where asking if any straight guys watch Queer as Folk.

Red Dog 02-28-05 03:07 PM

Not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me since he loved 90210 and he probably would identify with Seth.

B.A. 02-28-05 03:15 PM

Hell yes - and most of the time it's better than 90210.

El Scorcho 02-28-05 03:17 PM

I'm an avid fan.

The writing is wittier, and the girls are gorgeous. Olivia Wilde (Alex) is hands down the hottest chick on TV right now (and yes, I know Jennifer Garner is on TV).

If watching this show makes me gay, then fuck, pass the meat log my way.

It's great to see that you are living up to your "cool new member" status.

ShelleyLevene 02-28-05 03:27 PM

it is a soap opera and usually guys don't watch those type of shows even if the girls are hot.

Septemberbaby 02-28-05 03:36 PM

It's one of my husband's favorite shows.. and he's not gay!!
My 18 yr old son watches with his girlfriend and he's not gay!!

Not that they have this lesbian thing going, its made things more interesting.

fujishig 02-28-05 05:39 PM

I was about to say, they start this lesbian arc (which I'm not a big fan of myself) and you ask yourself if the majority of this show's fans are gay? Unless you're just trolling for responses, in which case, good job! :)

Totally correct.

Ah, but put it in primetime, disguise it as a drama, and put it on once a week, and you'll fool many a man into watching it. Though I would think, like 90210, it would be mostly teens watching, especially with the music and the product placements and such.

It just doesn't have sci-fi elements in it, which are the calling card of most male "soap operas".

jpdude 02-28-05 06:43 PM

I love The O.C. These kind of dramas just appeal to me. I was a huge fan of most of the nighttime serials from the past i.e. Dallas, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, 90210, Melrose Place. I used to love watching daytime dramas like AMC, OLTL, GH, the old Edge of Knight show, DAYS, etc.....I love listening to "POP" music i.e. Britney, Christina, BSB, NSYNC, etc. and I'm STR8. Oh, i love shopping too! Why do so many ignorant (generalized comment, not directed at anyone here) people have to label someone a certain way just because their tastes are a different from theirs? I've never understood that.

So I guess you are gay then? I mean, you watched 90210, plus you must have watched the OC at some point to make an opinion of it.

I haven't watched it since the first season, its not something I could watch every week, but as a huge comic book fan, I think the show is great & I have tons of respect for Heinberg the writer & Summer is reason enough for any hetero male to make it a priority to watch the show.

Plus I'm still young, younger then some of the actors on the show so the show isn't out of my demographic.

First of all, what sex are you? From the question I would assume male, but from your name, maybe otherwise.

Second, how old are you? That should inform the stupidity of this question and make it easier for people to be able to determine if your posts are relevant in the future.

Finally, "Queer As Folk" is gay. "Will and Grace" is gay. "The OC" is not gay. "90210" was not gay. This, of course, assumes that by "gay" you mean homosexual and not "dumb" or "stupid". So, I guess what you're trying to say here is that any male that watches a continuing storyline that may deal with relationships must only watch them because he's gay -- homosexual, as opposed to dumb or stupid.

BTW, I'm gay as a goose, watched "90210" and don't watch "The OC".

Trigger 02-28-05 08:28 PM

I can't get into it, but it's not cuz I'm straight... I'll probably check it out in reruns.

I watched All My Children when Sarah Michelle Gellar was on it. I don't watch The OC, but I did watch 90210 (and Melrose Place).

Xbox69 02-28-05 08:51 PM

Speaking as a gay guy who's never watched "The OC" or "Queer As Folk" . . . . ahhh, nevermind -- SportsCenter is on! :eyebrow:

I used to watch Swan's Crossing with SMG... hated her ever since.

MrJeff 03-01-05 01:11 AM

Well,

I at first thought this post was a joke just to see the comments. A thought like it would never occur to me, anyways..

I haven't watched the OC but I am still waiting for 90210 on DVD.

nightwing82 03-01-05 01:13 AM

I'm straight and I've never watched The O.C. (but its theme song is great).

I did watch 90210 though.

No Use For A Name 03-01-05 01:24 AM

Is there anybody so insecure that simply watching a TV show could threaten their sexuality?

TyroneJordan 03-01-05 01:38 AM

if you want lesbians and hot chicks, watch the L-word

boredsilly 03-01-05 04:48 AM

I haven't watched The OC yet but have every intention to ( have the dvds netflixed). I do however watch Gilmore Girls and Desperate Housewives so I'm guessing I'm gay and just haven't realized it yet.

Count Dooku 03-01-05 05:16 AM

http://www.altnet.ru/~simpson/Homer/41.gif Has the whole world gone gay?

movieking 03-01-05 06:25 AM

I'm guessing the poster is probably 12 or 13 years old, based on calling an entire series "gay". Once most people reach a certain age, they refrain from using "gay" as a slam against something. I'd expect such a ridiculous statement from someone in that age group, but for it to come from someone older than that either shows a homophobic attitude or just someone who has a lot of growing up to do.

Nope, I don't think so. A lttle casual research finds:

Other posts by the OP make references to things in his home like putting VCRs in the "master bedroom". Clearly, he seems to be a homeowner and possibly married -- certainly NOT 12 or 13!

Although you would think from this thread that he's homophobic, he can't forget
Spoiler:
how powerful Chris Cooper's final scene in American Beauty was.

"Shelley Levene" was Jack Lemmon's character in Glengarry Glen Ross -- I knew I'd heard the name somewhere -- and despite professing a love for Pacino films, didn't choose "Ricky Roma" as a screen name, Pacino's character in the same film.

A few references in other threads (like Charlize Theron's "fine ass") make me believe "ShelleyLevene" is male (or a raging bulldyke).

Since joining DVDTalk on 1/31/05, he's started 25(!) threads out of 39 posts, but seldom returns to a thread after he starts it.

Yeah, now I'm just stalking him.... -ohbfrank-

LOL! So because you thought the show was gay, you wanted to know if anyone other than gay people watch it? He is probably 12 or 13 and married.

SexualPudding 03-01-05 02:23 PM

I'm straight as an arrow, and I love the O.C. When I originally saw the previews last year before it aired, I dismissed it as a 90210 rip off, and I thought Benjamin McKenzie (Ryan) was just a cheap, annoying Russell Crowe wannabe. Then my gf made me watch it, and I thought Summer was hotter than 2 rats screwing in a wool sock, so I kept watching and really came to love the show for its witty dialog and characters (especially Seth).

I also watch and like Everwood, One Tree Hill, and I used to love Dawson's Creek. Only a close minded homophobe would deny quality tv shows just because they try and appeal to a certain demographic that isn't theirs.

Hey, I watch those too! What am I going to tell my wife?

spinning plates 03-01-05 05:00 PM

i'm from the oc, and it's funny to watch and see what kind of local references they try each show, even though newport is nothing like what it is on tv.

El Scorcho 03-01-05 05:29 PM

the oc is merely a caricature of what newport is like. That is, there's a lot of truth to the show, but also a lot of complete exaggeration.
