No, he kind of gasped it out, Ethan's name. He DID say it. Watched it a couple of times, even though it was obvious that's where it was headed, because I wanted to know for certain if Jack and the others would know who it was.

But, just because his name wasn't on the manifest (and we aren't 100% that it's him anyway) doesn't mean he wasn't on the plane. He could be a stowaway, or even an evil stowaway who caused the plane crash!
OK that's actually an interesting idea, albeit a stretch: could Ethan be a hijacker? A saboteur who caused the plane to crash?

Except he'd have to be good enough to get on the plane, and bad enough to cause the plane to crash... I can't believe he would've wanted to get stuck on an island.

IIRC, they said there would be a scientific explanation (and even that was qualified, ie phrased like "could be explained by science"), NOT that it would be "logical". Lots of stuff has a cause that COULD be explained by science (not IS explained, but COULD be, SOMEday), including psychic phenomena...

Yeah, he said something about there was danger from the child, something evil-sounding, and that her "goodness" was the only hope to save him, that it would help balance him. Not rescue him from outside danger, but balance his inner-danger.

Reading the summary above from the ABC "Lost" website, I was surprised by the way they described it:

This flashback describes the danger as being to Claire herself...

We FLASHBACK to Claire re-visiting the psychic, offering him more money and requesting that he continue her reading -she needs to know the future now that Thomas is gone because she intends on giving up the baby for adoption. But the psychic tells her that it's crucial she raise this child herself, warning her that great danger will befall her if she gives it up.

while this one specifies that the baby would be in danger.

FLASHBACK to the events she retells, where the psychic offers her money and a plane ticket to Los Angeles to meet a couple with whom the baby will be safe.

So, anyone who refunds money and convinces someone to get on a plane is automatically a psychic? Wow. That kind of logic is infallible.

Clearly, that guy was not obviously a psychic. He may have been psychic, but I think my previous statements have given enough explanation on why he may have done what he did without having to resort to contacting the spirit world.

If they're parsing the language in such Clintonese style (no political meaning intended, just a phrase people understand) then nothing they said means anything.

That's something I hadn't though of, Ethan could have been a hijacker that wanted to just take down the plane. I like it better though if he was already on the island, whether he's the child of the French woman is another story.

If Ethan was Frenchie's kid, he would had said he was from Montreal.

Just to pat myself on the back, this is how it ended. Except one addition, Ethan says something like "Hello, There" and looks at Claire's belly.

Nice pick up on the Romans 8:15 thing. may mean nothing (but awfull coincidental if it doesn't)

I'm still sticking to my statement that something is fishy about Mr. Hugo Reyes. Sure, he comes up with a name that wasn't on the manifest - HIS! My suspicions were only increased when it was him that wanted to, as Boone put it, implement his own Patriot Act. And we still don't have any proof that he was on the plane, so, until we do, I'm keeping my eye on him.

And check this out, an anagram of his name is - Uh Yes Ogre. So, obviously the monster is a giant Ogre.

I love the Oliver Stone-esque connection of that Romans verse though. The theories people come up with in this thread are great.

The anagram for Ethan Rom I thought of first was "Other Man" but that doesn't help things much. How many other folks heard him tell Hurley his last name and thought, "Cool! The island is the home of Spaceknights."

That would answer what the monster is, damn shape-shifting Dire Wraiths!

The name Ethan Rom is unique enough that it almost has to have another meaning.

Just waiting for Sawyer to trade a Gamecube for the Neutralizer...

"Give my best to that Reese's Pieces addicted turtle from Limbo, jackass."

Then again, didn't Rom banish the wraiths to Limbo? The idea that the crew is in Limbo seems to be the most popular...hrrrm.

If he's just a hijacker, why is he so interested in a pregnant woman and a hobbit?

Somehow I'm guessing the explanation will make about as much sense as a "Rimbaldi Device."

If an Irishman like Sam Neill can be the antichrist, then dammit, so can an Aussie.
