I like this season, but it hasn't blown me away like the first season did.

Despite its success, Murphy considers leaving 'Nip/Tuck'

Writer-director Ryan Murphy, creator of the acclaimed drama "Nip/Tuck," is considering leaving the show at the end of this season.

"In a weird way, it's like I am writing the (season) finale this year like I have said everything I have to say," Murphy said. "It's a big finale. I have it written in my head. It would be a finale for me."

Debuting a year ago, "Nip/Tuck" focuses on the practice of two successful plastic surgeons in Miami. The show is the FX cable channel's highest-rated series, drawing close to 5 million viewers on Tuesday nights.

Murphy writes many of the scripts, directs a few of the episodes and is involved in every detail of the episodes. The show launched its second season in June and will end it in October.

"Nip/Tuck" is often graphic, showing bloody and gory operations up close. This season has seen the introduction of major guest stars such as Fanke Janssen and Vanessa Redgrave.

The series stars Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon.

Murphy said he doubts the series will end if he departs since the ratings are so strong. Also, "Nip/Tuck" has won important critical acclaim, having earned a Golden Globe this year and there's buzz of possible Emmy nominations.

"It's rare to have a hit," he says, "so you have to watch what you do."

This fall Murphy begins work on the big-screen adaptation of the hit book "Running with Scissors." He will direct, with Julianne Moore attached to star.

"I've always wanted to be a director," he said.

The unforgiving pace of making "Nip/Tuck" is also tiring for Murphy. Making this season's 16 episodes has translated into 60-hour work weeks for him.

Previous to "Nip/Tuck," Murphy credited "Popular," a teen drama for the WB.

"I feel like I am in such a whirlwind because this show is my first big hit," Murphy said. "It's a critical hit and a hit with the audience, and I have never had that before. I have always been a very restless person and a very ambitious person.

"It is rare for me to stop and say 'I feel successful' because, in a way, I will never feel that way."

Um, I know it won't happen because the creator has sasid that he's done with the show after this season. The show might still go on, but it won't end in a cliff-hanger. Last season didn't really end in one either, so what makes you think that's what they'd do now.
