Just watched Buffy S6: "Once More With Feeling"

After watching OMWF again on DVD I really thought that it deserved to win an Emmy award for best drama. It was a phenomenal episode and it took what seemed like a crazy, perhaps even campy idea into a great dramatic episode.
...and I just loved Anya's song about "Bunnies!"

I don't know if you already know this or not but the reason it wasn't up for an Emmy was that Whedon et al. forgot to submit it. You have to submit specific episodes for consideration and they flat-out forgot. It might not have been nominated or won anyway but it wasn't even in the running.

I did not know that (that it wasn't submitted).
I still think it was so creative and innovative, and just so well written & executed that it deserved the emmy. Too bad that it never had a chance....

Also, for those who didn't know, there's a really great soundtrack CD available for this episode too:

Curses! Emmy Bites Buffy Again!

Curses! Emmy Bites Buffy Again!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer has always waged an uphill battle for Emmy recognition. But now, not only does the UPN sleeper have to convince members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that it's more than a freak show about vampires and demons and ghouls (oh my!), it apparently must also remind the Academy that it even exists! When ATAS sent out nomination ballots earlier this month, there was a glaring omission in the list of potential contenders in the drama writing category: Buffy's sublime musical episode, "Once More with Feeling," penned — punch lines, lyrics and all — by series creator Joss Whedon. What the hellmouth is going on here?
Human error was apparently to blame, but an ATAS spokesperson insists the problem has since been resolved. "We sent out a notification to the voters, which allowed them to cast their vote [for 'Once More with Feeling'] almost immediately," the rep tells TV Guide Online. "It was basically a supplement to the ballot. The situation was rectified ASAP and there were no repercussions from it."
Yeah, right. Those close to the situation say the snafu will likely cost Whedon whatever chance he had of getting noticed by voters. (The glitch will not impact Buffy in other categories, such as best drama series, nor will it hinder lead actress hopeful Sarah Michelle Gellar.) "Anybody who's going to get the ballot [will] make their initial picks and send it in," suggests a source at Fox, Buffy's production company. "There's always going to be a percentage of people who are not going to take the time to do what the postcard says, which is, 'Whoops, there was a mistake. Please consider ["Once More with Feeling"], and if you want to vote for it, we'll change your ballot.'"
Worse, even Buffy's code-cracking Scooby gang would have a tough time deciphering the addendum that the Academy mailed out, says goldderby.com award-show guru Tom O'Neil. "It entailed such an extraordinary effort that it was unlikely the voters would do it even if they loved the episode. So, it definitely curses its chances." — Michael Ausiello with Charlie Mason

Yeah, nobody's gonna take a show about a bunch of teenagers chasing vampires seriously, certainly not the people who hand out Emmys. Never mind that the show addressed serious issues with greater style, wit, and seriousness than nearly every other show in the history of TV.

The only time the Emmy's even nominated it for a Non-Makeup or Non-Music award was for writing and cinematography on "HUSH" It lost both nominations to The West Wing.
I find it ironic that the only episode that was ever nominated for outstanding writing was an episode where none of the characters spoke for 35 minutes.

I forgot they split the Hugo into short and long form in 2003.
2003 Dramatic Presentation, Short Form: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Conversations With Dead People"

Speaking of OMWF, I think I found a rather amusing goof in it. (I think I've watched the episode about thirty times since getting the set. And, yes, those around me are concerned.)
While Buffy is singing "Something to Sing About" at the Bronze, with Anya and Tara backing her up, it looks like Amber turned into a pole.
Watch carefully as Buffy sings "You don't get to rehearse, and every single verse." You can see Amber spinning around, and it sort of looks like she bounces off of something. Throughout the song, the dancers were moving back further and further, and there was a big pole behind Amber.
Then there's a cut, and in the next shot Amber is in, you can see her smiling like she's about to start laughing. It's out of focus, but very obvious.
And finally, when Buffy is singing the line "the million things or more," she's in the background dusting herself off.
Which would imply that all of the different shots were from the same take, or Amber was having a lot of trouble with that pole.

Some plot lines reached their payoff (Willow's memory charm, Dawn's kleptomania) while others took the show in new directions (Giles' dissatisfaction, the relationship with Spike, Buffy's reveal of the truth, etc.) The characters ended up in a very different place than they started; and "there's not a one who could say this ended well."
Even without the Emmy nomination snafu, I doubt the Academy would've honored this episode because it is so tightly tied to the characters and doesn't stand alone. Viewing a screener just wouldn't have done it justice. The voters would have had to be pretty familiar with Buffy in the first place to fully appreciate its achievement.

I haven't noticed that but we did just watch the episode where the Trio is testing buffy with various annoying plots and schemes. At the end when Johnathan turns into the red devil demon and utters one of my favorite lines ever - "I am well struck! Now I will summon the misty portal to my demon dimension where I will lay down my head and gently die!" - then "dissappears" (AKA, throws a smoke bomb and runs away... when he runs you can clearly see Spike cracking up like crazy before he composes himself and gets back into the scene. It's so funny. I bet they left it in on purpose. It's really great.

I didn;t see it when it originally aired, and I don;t think FX ever showed it, did they? but since buying the dvds, I have seen it at least 10 times, and find my self singing the songs whiel I am at work. Especially Anya's "Toughy / Buffy / Huffy" lines, that is my favorite of the songs. Great episode though, I made my fiance watch it, (she hates the show, but I have seen her smile when she thought I wasn't looking), she didn't get most of it either.
Tara does have a good voice, but the rest of them were obviously (and purposefully) akward.
Anya is my favorite character by far, and moreso even after this episode.

I agree with this. I know a bunch of people who watched the musical without having seen anything else from the show, and they didn't "get" it. The response I heard was, "their voices aren't that great, and what's with the bunnies?" It just doesn't work if you don't know what's going on, and I doubt Academy members ever knew or cared what was going on with this amazing show.

That's the brilliance of this episode, imo. Josh could've taken the easy way and done a stand-alone episode. ("Hush", for example, has little to do with the rest of the season, aside from introducing Tara and the Buffy/Riley stuff.) Instead, he made OMWF into one of the most pivotal episodes of the show.

By the way, we figured out why this episode is so damn addictive. After it aired we watched our tape for the full-length version practically every day. It was a nightmare. I would dream the songs. We'd talk about it endlessly. We were really obsessed. And after our billionth viewing we realized that it's a curse. There's a moment during "Life's a Show" when the camera cuts to an extreme closeup of Buffy where she looks directly into the camera(at the viewer) and sings "And you can sing along..." It's a very different style moment from the rest of the episode and we're convinced that it's some sort of spell or curse. I have to believe that! I must be able to explain the fact that I've seen it SOOOO many times!!!!1111!

I agree, I can't get the music out of my head. I even dl'd the soundtrack and I listen to it while running. It's like I'm obsessed.
