it takes away because as mentioned, the time would otherwise be spent on one of the family members or employees. If the show ever spent that much time on ex's in the time until they become relevant again, the show would be much more boring.
Also, as said, there's no chemistry.. and she was a hell of a lot more interesting when she was nuts. She better have a relapse and make a huge debacle of it to justify this attention.

I also found it weird the whole reaction to the blow-job.

True, Brenda is not part of the family or an employee. But she has been one of the main characters on this show from day one. Even nominated for best LEADING actress the first time the show was nominated. Supporting the second (because she wasn't in the first several episodes). She's not just an "ex". Look, I hated the whole Claire/Russell storyline. Mainly because I hated Russell. It just wasn't interesting to me. But that doesn't mean they should put her character on hold.
