BUMP (probably in Other, maybe I should have looked)
I'm looking forward to the Olympics here...and I've been watching the opening ceremonies, and I've just got a small beef to get off my chest (or shoulder, wherever the beef is coming from).
Bob Costas (and whoever is co-hosting) needs to shut his F'N mouth during certain moments. My main example: Bjork is performing a song (Oceania I think it's called) and he (and she) are both talking over it. Apparently the song is like 2 or 3 minutes, and for some odd reason they can't SHUT UP. It's at this point that I realize that the Olympics could benefit from TEXT (subtitled) commentary.
EDITED TO ADD: During the actual performance of opening ceremonies, showing Greece's history, it's musical, it's performance. I don't need to hear Costas and co-host yakking over it. Making some good points? Sure, but nothing that couldn't be covered in TEXT commentary. Ass.
At other points, they're practically busting on countries. Like Djabouti (I think I spelled it right) pronounced ja-booty. Costas: "You bet Djabouti." CLASSY there tough guy. Sometimes their commentary just isn't required. I'm surprised I didn't hear commentary during Germany about Hitler.
Whew....glad to get that out. In summary: Costas, shut your F'NG mouth.
Thank you.

Luckily the commentary wasn't even half as bad on the NBC HD feed of the opening ceremonies. Plus, less commercials, no annoying NBC graphics, and of course, it's in HD!

I'm not surprised about the taped coverage either - considering when the Olympics were in ATLANTA a few years back, the majority of events shown were STILL TAPE DELAYED!
I just hope NBC sticks to actually showing us EVENTS. The last Olympics aired were about 30 percent events and 70 percent vignettes about the athletes, where they came from, etc...which was rather dull to watch.

The "One and only commercial" for Sony HDTV, can't we have atleast 2 commerials? My wife and laugh everytimg the one and only commercial comes on.
Question for those watching in HD:
Does the sound start to "Vibrate" for about 30 seconds and then cuts back to "Normal". It is either a broadcast problem or my sound system is having problems. Any help would put my mind at ease.

I agree the HD is fantastic and the focus is on the ceremonies not NBC/commercials.

That is exactly what turned me off toward the Olympics the tape delay and the profiles about the athletes themselves I for one am glad I'm taking a pass at this I can't stand Bob Costas and his constant yakking all the time when an event is shown but I will probably catch the highlights on ESPN.

The NBC telecast may end up being the same as the past but the sister stations are doing it right. You ought to check it out.

I still doubt that the NBC Primetime time-tested strategy will change. That is where they make the bucks on this and where they will most heavily promote their Fall schedule. They need the chick viewers and they likely still believe that puff pieces are the only way to draw in the chicks.

Mary Carillo (from tennis fame) was much more professional and gave more facts on what was going on, greek history and all. No jokes, and kept quiet or whispered(used to it in tennis) during the quiet or dramatic moments. Not sure who she was commentating with, but he was better as well. Both were more fitting than the Bob & Katie show.
I was hyped that Voom is offering a bonus 3 HD Olympic only channels. Come to find out that the local NBC affiliate has to approve the broadcast, only to find out our local guys have their heads in the ground and I won't be getting them.

Oh, man. The HD commentary was 200% better. Since it was on tape delay I watched the first hour with Bob and Katie. Dreadful. You have this dramatic, emotional moment going on and they are cracking jokes. Sad.

I'll most likely be skipping the majority of the Olympics. I'm really not that big on the track aspect of track and field and that usually gets a pretty big chunk of coverage. Same for Gymnastics. High diving is appointment tv for me though.

As near as I can tell, the HD coverage of the Olympics is being shown in an 8 hour loop on a 24 delay. The loop either begins or is repeated beginning at noon eastern. Those that are watching the HD coverage, do you agree?
All the swimming results keep getting ruined no matter how hard I try to avoid the spoilers.

I have Comcast in the Dallas area and the Olympics, in HD, have been great. In fact all of my HD channels have been coming in with no break-ups. I had been having problems with certain HD channels not coming in sometimes and it looks like when the Olympics started all the problems vanished. Less commercials and better announcers...can't beat that with a stick.

I don't mind the delay, but my local affiliate doesn't broadcast at full signal strenth so last night it was in and out.
