speaking of 24 ripping off other programs, they kind of stole the virus storyline from early season 2 of alias. (it was right around when project christmas was first mentioned)

What? We've never had shows about bioterrorism, or with crying protagonists before?

I took it to be that Jack was feeling guilty over what Chase told him. Chase said he just couldn't spend his whole life unattached from the ones he loved, and he chose his family, or future family, over his job. Jack was feeling a lot of emotion after basically seeing that his daughter is all grown up, his wife is dead, and all he has is his job. I took his breakdown as him thinking he made the wrong choice, that he should have put his family first back when he was a young rookie like Chase.

And yet, when duty called, Jack picked himself up, wiped away the tears and went back to work. The man's committed.

To me it just seemed like a release of tension. In the past 24 hours he was required to be constantly on, dealing instantaneously with high-pressure situations and making crucial decisions, so he needed a few minutes to decompress.

Well said. This country needs more Jack Bauers and less Michael Moores.

Kind of a non-sequitor there. Michael Moore may be overzealous and fuzzy with his journalistic integrity, but he seems committed to me. Anyway, I would substitute the name of some slacker instead of Moore to make the point.

Moving back on topic for just a sec. The ax totally freaked me out and I was screaming for Jack to chop off the hand even before the ax shot.

Part of me hopes Palmer doesn't leave - he's a great character when the writers give him interesting storylines. I don't think joining CTU is an option as presidents have life-time Secret Service protection and I'm thinking they'd get in the way. Hey, if Palmer goes that means no more D.B. Woodside either

The Bauer breakdown at the end was touching. I forgot all about the ex-girlfriend and figured it would reach for a needle in the glove compartment. Oh ye of little faith.

Maybe now that the writers have until January to get the storylines together we won't have the mid-season lull 24 usually suffers from (along with amnesia, cougars, and random babies). Good finale though.

Did anyone else hope Jack would utter those now famous words again? "I'm gonna need a hacksaw."
lol. When Jack was rooting through the cabinets and drawers I turned to my wife and said, he's looking for a hacksaw. .

Why didnt they just put the bomb in a fish tank since a fridge isnt air tight?
Everyone knows you can't kill a fish on network tv!

I disagree. I took it as after 3 of the worst days of anyone's life, Jack is nearing superhero status. They had to bring him back amongst us mortals if he is to return for another year. It would be hard to suspend disbelief for another 'bad' day next year if the characters have no emotional involvement.

michael moore?

Ya know, they got a "they had no idea whether they'd be renewed for the next 11 hours" pass to explain the first season's lull.

That pass is no longer valid.

Shouldn't they have some broad idea of what the "day" will be before they shoot..?

The director should have said, "Keifer, your scum-bag soon-to-be-ex-wife is taking half of everything you own! Now cry for me, dammit!"

Yeah, this country was built by people who shut up and did what they were told. That's why we see that Union Jack on the pole at the Post Office each day.

Oh, wait...

No joke. I guess now that the show's over people are trying to drum up things to talk about, e.g. fish tanks v. fridges and Mike Moore. Please.

Though not nearly as fast-paced as the Jack/Chase/Saunders/Michelle/Tony line, the Palmer part was actually pretty interesting to me. I think watching Sesason Three as compared to Season One you can see the slow but steady decline in his moral character for personal gain...

Everyone's said so much about Keifer's scene at the end, but Haysbert was brilliant when he found out about the death of Sherry and Julia.

Yes, he was excellent. I would hope Palmer told his opponent that he's pulling from the race of his own accord, and not because of his half-assed blackmail attempt

You would think but I'm guessing no. Not everyone can be JMS and have everything laid out in advance but what a wonderful television world it would if all writers thought in the long term.

As usual, the voice of wisdom - you are so right. I was so bummed about the character possibly not returning that I completely forgot about the performance. Jobu will punish me.
