God, I'm so glad you guys don't write for the show.
You are so missing the point of the show, that I'm surprised you're still watching. What this show has been about from day one is the intrnal psycholgical struggles of the characters that are in lives that have two polar opposites (family/mob). It's all about motivation and behavior, which is much more interesting than what you described, which had absolutely zero depth.

my friends and i have been watching since season I. there is unanimous agreement among them and my coworkers that the seasons have steadily declined since the end of season II and it continues now. the last 2 episodes were horrendous. anyone who is a fan of the show from the beginning knows this is not that same show we all loved. this stuff is crap. no story lines are finished, some are even forgotten about completely.....where have paulie and silvio been all season???? season 5 is challenging season 4 for irrelevance.
ps: the next week's previews mean nothing. the previews are completely and intentionally misleading.....if you see a preview clip of paulie shooting at someone, its most likely a dog that has sh!t on his mother's lawn or something......weak

That is what happened on the show. So don't blame him, he didn't write it.

Actually, now I think about it...I may have heard it at a local strip club. Not nearly as good as the Bada Bing though.

If you want a soap opera, go watch Days Of Our Lives. Right from the get-go David Chase said (see the inverview in the 1st season dvd) that he wants each episode of Sopranos to be able to stand alone and be watched and enjoyed without any sort of baggage. The episodes are supposed to be very self-contained, and they always have been. Each episode has a psychological theme and even little asides have to do with these themes. There's nothing wrong with watching for surface action (see 24). But if that's all you're looking for in Sopranos, you're bound to be disappointed.
(btw, saying 24 is better than Sopranos is almost like saying Bad Boys is better than Godfather)

Uh, IMO, what we've got right now is a soap opera. And as for Chase's 'each episode stands alone', well, maybe we're watching a different series. I seem to recall a number of weeks wondering what was going on with FBI informants, among other things. Now, each week, I am left with less and less to think about what'll happen next...and the 'hook' of wondering, in my mind, was what kept people into the show. Even the previews are getting pretty dull, and given the considerable impact of editing, that is saying an Awful Lot.
The direction now is truly stand-alone and the show suffers for it. Everything is nicely wrapped up by the last commerical a la 1966 Star Trek.

I think this episode was strictly more character development.
Tony began to realize that he is turning into his father and I'm thinking he's not too proud about it. Also, something is going to happen with Junior this season...he's going to do something crazy and they have been setting this up with these past few episodes.
Christopher's storyline was interesting in that he was trying to help his friend from his "AA" group and realized that he ended up driving him back to the smack. Christopher showed that deep down he has a heart...instead of just "whacking" the guy like everyone on this board loves to have happen...he's doing his best to give the guy a break.

i agree.
The show was never -just- about who gets whacked this week. We're learning about Tony. Talking to his dad's old GF told us -A LOT- about him and what probably makes him tick.

well tv guide, gave the old woman who was Tony's dad's mistress a "cheers" as "she brought depth, grace, and sexual tension in her scene's with James Gandolfini"
