Good ep, though it would have been more compelling in some ways if Chappelle wasn't so much of a jerk before. He couldn't out-Mason Mason. Mason at least showed more humanity than Ryan.
I agree that killing Chappelle doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for Saunders, unless/except he wanted the fake router room to be found (I also feel bad for those guards!). Is it possible Chappelle has something embedded in him, or something, that makes having his dead body important.

What if the guys guarding the room were a liability? Pretty handy way for Saunders to cover his tracks, Having CTU take out his men. Then just for fun mess with Jack, Palmer, & Chapelle for fun to initiate this process.
speculation
ya never know in the 24 world.

It kinda reminded me of that scene in Titanic with the old people. i can't believe no one else has made that connection yet.

How could you do that? The van pick up guys had a clear shot. It's not like it was done in secret.

I thought Saunders wanted Chapelle dead solely because he was the "expert" at tracking bank accounts and he was getting too close?

Chappelle's death is faked, and CTU uses Gael's body and tries to pass it off as Chappelle.

but the problem is even with Chappelle's expert money tracing abilities.. the trail really ended up to be a cold one ... to an empty apartment with nothin but a router. (which may lead to somethin else but...)
I think Saunders just wanted to see how far the President is willing to bend to his will and/or just mindf$#@ Jack.
In otherwords, it didn't matter who died... as long was it was somebody in CTU who Jack knows/ works with.

That said, excellent episode on Sunday - gripping with excitement!

Somebody mentioned the virus handshake which of course happened at the end of last season. With the exception of the president looking at it and I think rubbing the infected area on his hand there has been no mention of what happened to him and who did it. Does anyone have any information about something I may have missed? Or does anyone have any ideas as to what that was all about?

I was convinced Jack was going to find a way to avoid shooting at the end. I should have known better.
