The Practice - 3/21/04

This episode seemed to be a breather episode.

The court case wasn't all that interesting (regardless of the chest beating from the writers on the erosion of the freedom of expression after 9/11).

The antics of Alan were humorous, just not LOL funny.

William Shatner's guest appearance wasn't all that interesting, even with the constant reference to his character in the 3rd person.

First time I watched The Practice in about 4 years and I enjoyed it. Shatner was great.

Holy smoke - who is that hottie with the British accent?

The hottie is Rhona Mitra (the original Tomb Raider model).

Wow, learn something new everyday, I guess. Cool

Shatner and Spader together are great. They could even do a sitcom together.

Love the Shatner / Spader team, but don't want it all the time, as it would feed into David E Kelly's worst Ally Mc Beal-like nutty tendencies.

The chemistry between Spader and Mitra is wonderful. I hope they do eventually hook up.

BTW for any Rhona Mitra fans out there (and who isn't one?) : this tidbit (spoilerized, but not relating to The Practice)
Spoiler:
Rhona has a very nice nude scene in the awful Kevin Bacon movie Hollow Man.

And she was in the superior ABC drama Gideon's Crossing in 2000-01.

And I knew about the mirror scene. I'm still thinking very seriously about buying the DVD, solely for it. That woman is awesome.

This is my favorite tv show ever. I dont think I've missed a episode in the last 3 years. So how is this going to end? Is spader really going to leave the show? His character is what has really juiced this show up. Its more of a comedy/drama now and it was needed.

You missed the show at its peak, which was like five years ago. It really was good then, before it got all preachy. It never really deserved the Best Drama Emmy it won stunningly over the first (and by far the best) season of The Sopranos, but it was really quite good back then. The last few years have been really weak, but Spader sure changed everything there.
So how is this going to end? Is spader really going to leave the show?

...and speakuing of getting all preachy, how about the Elenore case this week? That was nothing but Kelly trying to rally around a cause. If that were a real case, this whole arguement would have been shut right down because it doesn't matter if you're upset that a police officer asks you to leave; if you strike him, it's assault. The judge should have shut that whole defense right down and the prosecuter should have objected, instead of trying to argue the merits of the "free speech zone" -- it's totally irrelevant to the case.

Sometimes I wish Kelly would use more writers on his shows. After fifteen-plus years of watching his shows (LA Law, Picket Fences, Chicago Hope and The Practice), I've come to know every trick in his bag and even the good ones are pretty stale by now.

The "slow acknowledging nods" were pretty laughable. If not for that obvious B-story, this would have been a fantastic episode. Still pretty good, though.

I've often lamented the rapid decline of this show over the past few years, because I too loved it when it was at its peak; but I can't help wonder if I enjoy it even more now than I ever did, simply because of the Alan Shore character. This whole season has provided some of the funniest moments on television right now.

Even I found myself during Ellenor's case.

I find it funny that the same person who created the character of Alan Shore is also responsible for storylines like that...

Oh yeah, Shatner ruled.

not only would the judge's decision be immediately over turned on appeal, I think there'd be a serious attempt at having him removed from the bench due to the wording of his ruling

I watched the show the past 2 weeks because it was broadcast in HD. I thought the show was very funny, not your normal "Lawyer" drama.

Cannot wait to see how Shatner plays out in the show.

Very funny and entertaining.

I agree with pretty much everything that's been said already, great episode except for Elenor's case.

Alan's e-mail of Jimmy and the wardrobe malfunction was great

They must use the same person to do the animated emails on all the David E. Kelley shows because Boston Public had the same type of humiliation animation on that show as well.
