I loved how Auto got in the wrong line and had to see an English coal miners movie.
Lisa: Your matierial is bland and uninteresting.
Lucas: I'm going back to my roots...ripping off old westerns and Japanese samurai movies.
And then George Lucas jumps on a f'ing Taun-taun! I'm sorry but that was the funniest thing I've ever seen.

What I didn't understand was that they've already established that Star Wars exists within the Simpsons universe (Mark Hamill appearing as Luke, Homer blowing the ending of Empire, "I bent my Wookie", etc.).
Why bother to to construct the "Cosmic Wars" facade? It's not like they said anything slanderous (or original) anyway.
Still, I liked the "on hold" joke. The rest was very meh.

This episode was great, I was laughing throughout it. In fact, I think it's one of the better ones of the season. The "on hold" bit, playing catch with "Lucas", the Good Book, and most of all, the classic bidet line by Moe:
"It's cause of her that I had a bidet installed. OK, it's just a stepladder by the water fountain"
I was on the floor for 10 minutes just laughing at that one...

I dunno. it was alright. nothing really too special since the star wars joke would have worked much better if used sometime in the past 3 years instead of now.

That episode actually inspired me...
...to write a letter to Al Jean and Matt Groening to complain about this lackluster season and how the show has lost its way.

Not a great episode, but not exactly poor. Every season has had a few clunkers. Personally, i think most of the episodes this season has been surprisingly good, and seeing the same comments about the show dying every week is getting a little annoying.

Anyone know what the second movie in the third panel was? A Kiss Before Bon(m)?

Making fun of Star Wars prequels is always funny. But when they confront Lucas, was I the only one that said "South Park did it"?
Marge in rehab also felt like old hat but Homer on the phone more than made up for it. Didn't recognize the tune of the first one but the second one was 'MacArthur Park' right?

Can we get some kind of programmed solution whereby every Simpsons thread starts out with:
and:
followed by:
since these three posts (though maybe not by these particular posters) seem to appear in EVERY Simpsons thread?!

Reminds me of this forum. There are people here who have been complaining about this show for YEARS. Yet they still watch, and they still complain.

I thought this episode does more than almost any other episode to help shatter the myth that 'cartoons are for kids.' This ep really did deal with some major adult themes:
* child abandonment/neglect/latchkey kids
* peer pressure
* the perception that 'you have to drink to have fun'
* DUI
* trust
* dealing with addiction
* chronic alcoholism and the acceptance of that
The Star Wars bits did seem somewhat dusty, but perhaps they were there to counter the seriousness of the main plotline.
While this did have some soon-to-be-classic gags, this wasn't a classic laugh-out-loud Simpsons; rather, an attempt to tackle or show some serious issues that affect even cartoon families without being too much of a downer. I think it's very much like A Streetcar Named Marge in that regard, and when it comes out on DVD, in, what, 2042, this would be an episode I'd show to someone who said 'You watch cartoons? How stupid/juvenile.'

Now that we have a screen shot of the theater marquee, we should also point out the great titles that were discussed by Homer, Lisa, and Lenny.

I thought this episode was from three years ago or something with all the SW jokes. I usually only catch the show in syndication, so I don't pay attention to upcoming eps.
And that doesn't make sense making up Cosmic Wars when they've already established Star Wars. They even did it in the first season where Bart says the only good wars are the Revolutionary War, WW II and Star Wars.
