Simpsons 03/21/04

Decent episode, but not great.

Spoiler:
I thought that there was going to be more of a conclusion to the Cosmic Wars bit at the beginning. The whole Marge driving drunk thing was not a great plot either, and has been done before with Homer (remember Barney:"Thank You Giant Beer Can"?)

Eric F 03-21-04 07:29 PM

That was so 1999.

They can't think of anything current to parody?

RichC2 03-21-04 07:30 PM

They shouldn't need to parody. :\

Watched a couple Season 10 episodes earlier tonight, those surprisingly held up quite well ("But you liked Rashomon." "That's not how I remember it") Dunno much of what I'm thinking of this season really, some good episodes and funny gags but overall kind of.. odd.

This episode was entertaining but seemed to end mid episode heh.

Tony Dvdfan 03-21-04 07:32 PM

Pretty boring ep, the whole Cosmic Wars thing felt worn.

LBCrazyFool 03-21-04 07:32 PM

I thought it was one of the better episodes of this season.

Eplicon 03-21-04 07:34 PM

The first couple minutes were somewhat funny, but then went downhill. The parody was too dated to be even funny. How many "worst episode ever!" can this show have?

the aftermath 03-21-04 07:37 PM

It saddens me how far The Simpsons has fallen over the years :(

j123vt_99 03-21-04 08:02 PM

drunk driving really doesn;t make for a funny comic plot

maybe they could make a funny episode where Maggie gets AIDS or Bart has cancer

Tuan Jim 03-21-04 08:08 PM

Duffmensch was pretty funny. Maybe not in the right way though.

Eric F 03-21-04 08:58 PM

There are German Jews still.

I didn't find the "leaving your children unattended" bit very funny either.

whotony 03-21-04 09:34 PM

i thought it was a riot.
too bad we'll have to wait 13 years for this season to hit dvd as it seems to be the best in about 5 years.

Deftones 03-21-04 10:38 PM

I liked Homer when he put the rehab place on hold.

Ralph Wiggum 03-21-04 10:44 PM

I thought there were some laughs. The Star Wars material wasn't anything close to fresh (was this an old script?), but it was accurate.

Like a lot of this season, it felt as if it was just an amalgam of old episodes.

BlackCapTen 03-22-04 12:29 AM

Decent show, but not as great as other recent episodes. Generally speaking I've enjoyed this season thus far.

MrX 03-22-04 12:39 AM

The beday in Moe's was pretty funny:lol:

The Cosmic Wars stuff was old but some of it was still good. Comic Book Guy dressed as George Lucus was funny.

dcprules 03-22-04 12:46 AM

Parts of this episode were great (the part where Homer was on hold was great, best part of the episode). Granted, I thought the Star Wars stuff was overdone but still funny. Overall, though, it definitely wasn't up too par with some of the more recent episdoes from the season (last week's was great).

BJacks 03-22-04 01:25 AM

I liked the "Andy Dick Is In/Out" sign at the entrance of the rehab clinic. A few good laughs, but nothing overwhelmingly impressive. Still, beats most of the other stuff on TV.

movieking 03-22-04 06:38 AM

I agree on the tastelessness of the whole drunk driving plot (not a big fan of child abandonment, but DUIing ins much much worse, and hey it is a cartoon). But when they approached it on Everybody Loves Raymond (Debra falls asleep in the car drunk and gets arrest, at least they did not have her actually driving the car drunk (semantics really, but I still didn't like that storyline in ELR either)

Eric F 03-22-04 07:30 AM

Yeah, well, I figured they left their kids home unattended, they'ld make the leap to having Marge drive drunk. Then later in the show Homer gave his kids to Flanders to watch, but then the Simpsons has never been consistent.

Homer and Bart have been declared illiterate, yet they're able to read in the next episode.

silentbob007 03-22-04 07:40 AM

I think I could actually hear the sputtering of the writing on this one ... just very little new.

Phyre 03-22-04 08:47 AM

I disagree; other than the tired Star Wars parody the writing of the Marge drunk plot was very solid. Admitidly it was not in the least bit original but it is logical with some of Marge's behavior in the past, many of the gags were great and they didn't linger on any element of the plot long enough for it to get tired.

bboisvert 03-22-04 09:41 AM

I definitely thought that the Star Wars parody was oddly-timed (a joke that is about 4 years too late), but I must admit that I was laughing pretty hard throughout almost the entire episode start to finish. I can't really complain.

Pointyskull 03-22-04 09:53 AM

Whether its tasteless or out-of-date, it cracked me up - as it does every week. I still think the show is darn funny.

I just want to add that am I constantly amazed at how many people seem to think the show is tired or old, but still manage to not just watch it every week, but write about it as well.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but when a show starts losing me, I'm gone and don't look back.

Morf 03-22-04 10:36 AM

I'll admit-- I laughed at many of the Star Wars jokes, even though they were terribly dated.

The other part that cracked me up is when Homer opened the can of soda in the car, and it poured up. Classic.

twikoff 03-22-04 10:39 AM

homer went to jail
marge went to jail
bart goes to jail next week
who is next?

and homer/marge playing catch was lucas was pretty funny
