USAToday Now Reporting "Tivo's Most Recorded"

Kind of interesting...

TiVo's most-recorded shows of the week

1 American Idol (Monday) Fox 24.0%

2 American Idol (Tuesday) Fox 23.7%

3 American Idol (Wednesday) Fox 21.1%

4 The Apprentice NBC 19.5%

5 Obnoxious Fiance Fox 16.4%

6 Will & Grace NBC 15.4%

7 Scrubs NBC 12.1%

8 Friends NBC 12.0%

9 Alias ABC 11.9%

10 The O.C. Fox 11.1%

Source: TiVo, week of Jan. 18-24; based on an analysis of viewing preferences of an anonymous aggregate sample of 20,000 households; reflects recorded and live viewing of prime-time programs on the six major networks; 1 - majority viewed live

AI 1-2-3, eh. All this tells me is that TIVO owners have no taste.

Ugh. Why did reality TV shows have to be the top 5? Not that they're the devil or anything, but it'll just encourage execs to make more, as opposed to writing better scripted (non-reality?) shows. At least Alias and Scrubs are up there.

I record 7, the mrs watches AI.

I like this method better than the Nielsens, its a bit more realistic I think. and I think advertisers would like it as Tivo sure fits in that 18-30 demographic.

Oh I missed the sample of 20K. I know they post stats after the superbowl.

I record the bottom 4. Scrubs and The O.C. for myself, and the Mrs. and I watch Friends and Alias together. As long as the wife doesn't miss a new Alias ep, I have a little less to worry about.

It's better than the Nielsens in that it counts recorded programs as well.

However, the main flaw is that it doesn't tell the networks the demographics.

No, and used car salesmen are honest.

I’m pleased to report I don’t record/watch any on the list.

I have a question: this “anonymous aggregate sample,” do they know they are being sampled? The conspiracy theorist/cynic in me suggests there’s nothing keeping Tivo from collecting info from every subscriber.

I record exactly 0 of those. Used to record Friends, but that's it.

TiVo does collect anonymous info from every subscriber, although you can opt out.

Which is 100% fine by me. I like having at least some input in what programs stay and which go, even if it is miniscule. If TiVo reports that I record Program X, Y, and Z, what do I care?

Question: Isn't it just as easy to get the stats for EVERY Tivo user as it is to pick 20,000 random ones? Why do a sampling? Why not just download the full week's data and list the top 10?

A little inaccurate IMO - 24 was pre-empted by the State of the Union address. I bet that is up in the top 10. Even so, I think I recorded 7 of those 10. (In my defense, I recorded AI so I could quickly skip to the better parts of the show after the fact and only watch the funny parts.)

Does this sort of reporting bode well for the networks though? This means the advertisers on these show can pretty much be assured that no one watched their commercials.

Same here. And we're both big Babylon 5 fans, have similar thoughts on Enterprise, etc. So Wizdar, what else should I be watching on TV?

I was going to ask the same thing. It does seem rather odd, doesn't it? It's my understanding that TiVo sends out the data unless you opt out or don't have a phone line collected. They should just report on everything they have.

I recorded 1,2,3,7, and 9.

Not that I give a rat's ass about American Idol, I do like watching the first few episodes of each season when they have the initial tryouts and half the people sound worse than a dog getting a rectal exam.

If this doesn't prove that Tivo has become mainstream, nothing will.

I too recorded none of those listed.

I think they would like to report, but a lot of people arent too happy with the idea of big tivo tracking what they watch.

Man, the top 5 are "reality programs" guess there's no chance of TV improving in the near future.

Woohoo! That's 7! I'm a loser!

American Idol is BRUTAL if you watch it live...it's like 8 commercials per minute and a half of programming. That's why we lost track of it last year. We'd watch the first five min, change the channel during the neverending commercials and then forget about it. Tivo is the best invention ever
