I've noticed everything seems to focus on who their guest voice is for the week. Yeah, like Bart living with Tony Hawk will mean ANYTHING in 10 years time.

I think the big problem with The Simpsons these last 5 years or so has been the lack of heart in the episodes. The Simpsons has alway been a cynical show, but with some heart. Now it is just pure cynicism with no heart, so it makes everything seem cheap and unfunny after a while. They lost what little humanity they used have and they are truly more of a 'cartoon' these days.

It seems like they have a lot of potential but really fall flat on the face with the punch line. the death one could have been better if the direction was there for it. the turn to kill marge seemed like a cheap way to end it already with no pay out.

I thought the death one wasnt to bad but not not great either, I give it a meh.

The time stopping one was pretty good with the naked homer and nelson. Also bart giving the pope a wedgie was funny. Over all I give it a little giggle.

The Frinkestein one sucked and it was awful. The french can keep Jerry Lewis. I give this one a zzzzzz

Would you have liked the episode any better if it would have been broadcast before or on Halloween? I wouldn't have and it made no difference to me that it was on after Halloween was over.

Aren't they the longest running sitcom in TV history? They are certainly the longest animated series. If anything, I hope Groening cancels it before ratings are bad and he runs out of good ideas. Other than this episode, I haven't watched the Simpsons for over a year.

I think the Simpsons are catching the SNL bug. Both have been on a long time. they still get a few chuckles here and there, but the writers for both just don't know how to finish the skit (or show).

I think either a batch of new writers or even the original writers would put some bounce in their show

No one laughed at the simpsons turning into the fantastic 4 and bart as Mr. Fantastic tricking homer as the thing? That was comedy gold

Yes, the fantastic 4 thing was pretty good, also the donut disappearing act during the stopwatch was funny... bringing in Nelson to laugh 'ha-ha' then be stripped of HIS clothes was funny.

Technically they are the longest running sitcom. The title of longest running scripted television program (e.g. non-news) is currently held by Gunsmoke! with a whopping 20 years. After the show's contract was renewed last year, Al Jean or Matt Groening joked about how they would keep going until they beat out Gunsmoke!.

I blame the Internet and the resurgence of swing music. Overall this episode was pretty meh. I'm pretty sure I chuckled a couple of times but I honestly can't remember when.

Even though the Simpsons is the longest running sitcom, they don't have the most episodes of a weekly primetime sitcom. Ozzie and Harriett currently have about 120 more episodes aired (around 315 vs 435) because the tv "season" was longer back in it's day.

Now if the Simpsons wanted to reach Gunsmoke's number of episodes they are about halfway to the 633 they need. So they would have to be renewed for another 15 years or so. Actually, If your criteria is just scripted program then Gunsmoke is beaten by Guiding Light by about 30 years (and it was on radio for 15 years before that). Gunsmoke is the longest if you just consider weekly shows, or just primetime shows.

In order for the Simpsons to beat Guiding Light for number of episodes (if GL were to be canceled today and stop making new episodes) it would have to be renewed for the next 750 years to get the nearly 17,000 episodes needed.
