While he's a very important part of this series, it wasn't The John Ritter Show. Like any actor, he was cast in a role that could have gone to someone else. Having seen the series, I don't see how it could have worked with anyone else nor can I imagine how it's going to work without him, but it's not like the series is some exlusive John Ritter project.

Well, I was going to say "Come out with new episodes of 'Cooking with Emeril' with Wolfgang Puck as the host" but alas, I only just remembered Puck's name!
