We're getting down to the wire with this list (no pun intended since I don't watch that particular show).

Boomtown "Pilot" as much as I love this show I think that the Pilot was by far the best episode. It had the best use of the multiple storyline gimmick they were aiming for and the beginning with the end was great. I really hope they get back to the premise in the next season.

"Conversations With Dead People" I love that episode. It's a shame that Amber Benson couldn't/wouldn't come back to do it since that would have made it all the more powerful. My only itty bitty gripe is that Xander wasn't in the ep but I can understand that there really wasn't anybody for him to converse with.

With all the accolades for Everwood I might have to revise my notion of not watching any new shows this coming season.

I factored that in, and it's why I chose it above 'Lost Child' and 'Blackout'.

My mind had intense arguments with itself over the positioning of this episode. It was probably the most difficult choice I made out of the entire list.

Hopefully when I get home from work. I wanted to have it posted last night, but I ended up having to go to the office all day and just never got the chance. One more day without having to face the anger of fans of a certain show is probably a good thing anyway. ;)

I've been out of town and just found this thread. What a great surprise. I hope to see "The David McNorris Show" on the top 10.

Also, I'm curious if you had any comedies up for consideration or if you knocked any dramatic episodes out of consideration because they relied too heavily on comedy. I guess the main reason I'm curious is because I fell in love with Scrubs this season and I've been absolutely amazed at how well they can mix comedy and drama.

Venusian 08-18-03 08:57 PM

he said before he is only doing dramas because comedies are too subjective. I think Scrubs safely falls into the sitcom category (even though not a typical sitcom), so it is excluded.

Welcome back. As for "The David McNorris Show," I already gave Boomtown 3 spots. Don't you think you're being a bit greedy?

Scrubs rules. I had to draw the line somewhere, though, and Scrubs/Gilmore girls is where I chose to draw it. When choosing what "qualified" I made the decision based on the show, not the episode, so a comedy episode of a drama could make it, but a dramatic episode of a comedy wouldn't. Once I drew the line of which shows qualified, I didn't penalize any episode for being overly funny (e.g. 'Captain Lucidity'). It's a can of worms either way, especially with so many shows that blur the line, but I had to make cuts somewhere.

nny 08-18-03 09:16 PM

Hehe, I just started reading 50-21 and saw what you said in the "Captain Lucidity" description. Then I come back here and you said, "a comedy episode of a drama could make it, but a dramatic episode of a comedy wouldn't."

I don't want to be a bastard and I know it's just our opinions, but imo Scrubs and Gilmore Girls not only have more dramatic moments than Ed, their dramatic moments are far more powerful and better done than Ed's. Just because Ed isn't as funny as Gilmore or Scrubs doesn't mean it's a drama. Btw, I like Ed and "Captain Lucidity" was a great episode, but I wouldn't even call Ed a dramedy, much less a drama.

Also, "The David McNorris Show" was not only the best episode of Boomtown, but as I commented in the earlier thread about your greatest list, it was 1 of only 2 episodes out of every show I watched this season that really stood out as amazing.

I just reread my post and I think I might have exaggerated a little bit. It's just that I don't tune into Ed to see which girl he's going to choose. I tune into Ed to laugh. I also tune into Gilmore Girls and Scrubs to laugh, but the main characters in these 2 shows are so well-developed they feel like real people to me. Half the characters in Ed are there just for various jokes and don't feel developed at all to me. One of the main reasons I watch dramas is for character development and I don't find any in Ed.

Btw, I just wanted to add that I'm very thankful for this list. I didn't agree with your list last year and I don't agree with it this year either, but I love thinking about these shows and discussing them.

Alright, I'll come clean. I'm in love with Sabrina Lloyd. Now let me have my moment! ;)

How can you say you don't agree with it when you haven't even seen the Top 10 yet? ;) (btw, I figured you wouldn't be happy when I dropped 'Apocalypse, Nowish' so low, but upon rewatching it a couple of times, it doesn't hold up to some of the others IMO).

Anyway, I wouldn't expect people to agree. Each of us would have our own list, which is what makes television (and all art) wonderful. If nothing else, I would just hope to spark some discussion and maybe encourage others to make their own lists.

I was wondering about Gilmore Girls. Of course I have never seen it since its not on Fox (;)) but I heard it was one of the best shows on tv. You agree? I figured it was primarily a chick show? is that true?

Hehe, well I already know the top 10 isn't going to include 4 of my 5 favorite episodes of the season. My top 5 would probably be:
1. Angel: Apocalypse, Nowish
2. Scrubs: My Overkill
3. BTVS: Chosen
4. Boomtown: The David McNorris Show
5. BTVS: Conversations With Dead People

Actually that list isn't really accurate considering just about the only show all season that I've watched twice is Chosen. With some repeated viewings I could probably make a top 10 and some SFU episodes would definitely make it.

martin q. blank 08-18-03 10:32 PM

I just wanted to chime in here about Ed. I think Ed does just fine with character development, especially with the major characters.

das, interesting list so far.

Gilmore Girls is the most consistently good show on tv. It's the only show I can think of that has had 3 seasons and hasn't had a bad episode yet. Some of the dramatic aspects could qualify it as a chick show if they weren't so realistic and well-done. But regardless of that, the show is filled to the brim with comedy and the comedy is not at all what I would consider chick comedy. Make sure to check it out.

I think the season 2 finale was shown yesterday. Maybe you can catch the season 3 premiere next Sunday.

About f'n time man..

I cheated and scrolled ahead to see what your choices were ['bout time we got some Farscape up in this piece..], but I don't know your reasons..

I'll have to go back and read 'em once I Love the 70s is over..

If we ever get avatars, may I suggest this one for you:

Again, vB really screwed with me on the images, so hopefully it balances out. I wanted to do the sizing more consistenly, but it just won't let me. In addition to the text wrapping being all whacked, I had to rework everything a second time, since it wouldn't allow me enough images. I dropped the ones I thought were least important, including all smileys and a couple of -eek-'s. Let me know if something looks wrong.

Anyway, to quote Tony Kornheiser, "That's it! That's the list! I win!" :D ;)

I'm so f'n exhausted, I can barely focus on my monitor, so I'm going to bed. I didn't have time to proofread this thing, but at this point I don't care. Sleep awaits. Enjoy.

nny 08-19-03 12:57 AM

Hehe, you fooled me. Good to see "The David McNorris Show" so high and of course Conversations only missed the top 10 by one spot. As for the rest of the top 10, I'm watching reruns of Farscape and I just started watching West Wing reruns. I've tried many times to watch Everwood because it looks like the type of show I would like, but it just seems so mediocre everytime I watch it. The Wire is just like The Sopranos in the fact that I can tell both are very well made, but for some reason I don't like either of them that much.

The Shield wasn't anywhere near as good this season as last, but it was still one of the best shows on tv. But there is not a single episode that sticks out in my mind. The whole season just kinda runs together to me. The season finale was really good, but I'd have to watch the whole season again to comment on it.

"Perfect Circles" was great, but it also has enough flaws that there were other better episodes of SFU this season. Maybe if they would ever deal with some of the things that came up in this episode I would absolutely love this episode.

Even though I said I didn't agree with your list earlier, I have to say I'm amazed at how much I agree with your comments. Last year I didn't agree with your list at all because I had such strong feelings about my own favorite episodes. This season of TV was so disappointing after the previous few years being absolutely amazing, so I guess I have less to disagree with you about.

The only major omission I can think of is Firefly-"Out of Gas". That was definitely my favorite episode. Also, I think my second favorite Firefly episode was "Serenity", but I haven't seen the unaired ones yet. Btw, if I didn't make it clear earlier, I completely agree with the inclusion of "Captain Lucidity". I also wouldn't put any episodes of Gilmore Girls on this list, but I still would've liked Scrubs on here. Maybe there was less drama on Scrubs than I'm remembering, but the fact that the drama had such an impact on me leads me to believe that it belongs on here.

I'm halfway through reading the comments on each episode and I can't decide if I should read some of them since I don't like spoilers. I know I'm not going to read any of the Farscape ones because I know eventually I'll see every episode of that show. I'm watching The Sopranos reruns on Sundays right now and am just starting West Wing on Bravo. I don't know if I'm going to stick with both series all the way through though.

Anyways, I love the list and hope to see it again next year. We've still got over a month until the majority of the shows start up again and it's great to read about some of the best moments from last season while we wait.

Rogue588 08-19-03 01:44 AM

so....out of your 50, i've seen 17 of 'em.

Ed - i've just started watching. Boomtown - I could never seem to catch at the right time [and still haven't]. And the rest that I might possibly wanna check out are on pay channels. [yes, i'm too lazy to d/l 'em on USEnet]

anyways, this was an interesting list Senor Monkey. next season perhaps well get 100? or maybe 50 Dramatic & 50 comedic? :D

btw...I was wondering if you were contradicting youself by saying

"and for all the hype and love we have for The Sopranos and Six Feet Under, The Wire is quite possibly the best thing on all of television."
and then following it up with

"Even after an average season -- by its standards -- there isn't a doubt in my mind that The West Wing is the best series on network television..."
Then I realized that I skipped over the paragraph that said

"Having now seen most of Season 2, there's no "quite possibly" to it. Let me say this as plainly and clearly as possible: The Wire is the best show on television."

Chew 08-19-03 06:28 AM

Oh, I don't think he's contradicting himself at all.

West Wing: best show on network television.

The Wire: best show on all of television.

Because it's not TV, it's HBO. ;)

Great list das.

Oh so close on A Night in Sickbay.........

lisadoris 08-19-03 07:13 AM

Great list das, I only wished I watched all of the shows on it so my appreciation would be complete!

West Wing "Commencement" I loved this episode when it first aired though I thought the kidnapping this was a bit contrived. That opinion changed completely when I saw a first season episode that basically spelled out the entire situation.

BTVS "Chosen" Also an episode I really loved. I came into Buffy extremely late (as in right before the last season) and was able to catch up on almost everything via FX reruns and S1&2 sets. My only complaint with that episode is that the girl power montage was a tad heavy-handed but I think that was the point. The powerfulness of Spike's sacrifice was sort of diminished by
Spoiler:
the announcement that he's moving to Angel
but some things can't be helped.

SFU "Perfect Circles" this episode had one of the most touching moments of the series for me (and that's saying a hell of a lot). In one of the alternate realities something has obviously gone wrong with Nate's surgery and you see David trying to teach Nate how to talk again. With so much tension between these two you really get to see how much David cares. It was great.

WW "Twenty-Five" all is right with the world because babies come with hats. Toby's moment with his newborns were just wonderful to the point where I almost cried (I may cry at movies but it's damn rare that I cry for TV). This episode is just proof that Sorkin will be missed on that show. And here's hoping that Charlie does get to beat the crap out of that kid in the season opener.

Chew 08-19-03 07:24 AM

Now that I've seen the whole list:  I've seen 35 of them!

Not das-level, but not too shabby. :)

Bah. The worst episode of "The Shield" is still better than the best episode of "Boomtown".
