Around the Horn
Does anyone really enjoy this show? I like PTI and watch Around the Horn since it is the lead in, but really dislike most aspects about it. Max Kellerman is not a good host... He sounds like he has a bit of a lisp and when they are debating a topic his answer is the correct one.. Also most of the newspaper guys are pretty arrogant and just bicker the whole time.. What do you guys think?

I think I've seen a grand total of 10 minutes of the show since it began. My conclusion based on those 10 minutes is that there is no need for me to watch any more of that program. Life is just too short to put myself through that kind of torture.

I watched the first one and couldn't stand it. Max is okay but I really cannot stand Woody Paige. I have always hated his writing so it was a natural that I would hate him talking.
Too bad they can't find another vehicle for Bob Ryan. They should just make him permanent guest co-host of PTI whenever Tony or Wilbon aren't there.

All you have to do is throw that fat slug TJ Simers on camera for one minute, and you know I'll never watch it again.

I respectfully disagree with all of you when I say that this is a great sports show. The extensive knowledge of each of the reporters is truly astonishing. They bring up streaks, averages, lifetime stats, etc. to back up their positions. Even Max has a very good knowledge of sports trivia and history.
I like the banter between them. It feels like I'm sitting in a bar discussing sports with my friends.
PTI is also a great show...but only when Wilbon AND Kornheiser are there. The guest hosts just plain sucked. As for ATH, I think they have an awesome lineup right now. Paige, Mariotti, Holley, Blankenship(I think that's his name. The guy from the Dallas Morning news with glasses) are phenominal. Plaschke is ok. Simers and Colinshaw can go.
As for the style of show...it's the Sports Reporters...but with more fun. Sports Reporters always seemed too serious and formal. I like the fact that the guys on ATH get worked up and yell. When I'm talking sports...I do that also.

It's ok.
Kellerman should stick to boxing and I can only take so much of Moronotti.
I crack up everytime I see Michael Holley. Here's a guy that left Boston for a job at the Chicago Tribune. Got homesick after 2 weeks, quit the tribune, and went back to Boston.

I, for one, am certainly glad that Holley left the Tribune and came back to the Boston Globe. He is turning into a great writer.
As for the show... Kellerman is better than I would have thought. He prepares well for the show and knows the facts - most of the time. I wish they would get more midwest reporters though. Woody Paige everyday is too much. We need more Bob Ryan - is he totally off the show now?

I like the show a great deal. The writers know what they're talking about and Kellerman does a good job dealing with everyone trying to talk at once. Lots of laughs and it is a perfect lead-in for PTI.

There's no spontaneity. Good points are made (few and far between), but these guys get time to think about it. Then Mariotti and Holley start arguing over their favorite Michael Jackson song, and it's time to change the channel. Kellerman makes for a decent host, but I'm not particularly interested in his opinion. I like the Disembodied Voice. hmm Maybe Sportscenter should start an hour earlier. Buy or sell? I'm selling.
Does Woody Paige seem mental to anyone else? (rhetorical question?)

The show has grown on me and is now one of my favorites. At first I could only bear to watch a few minutes of it and did not care to watch it again. I gave it another chance a month ago and it is actually very entertaining. Like an earlier post said, the sports reporters are too reserved (and as crazy as Paige and Marriotti are, one can only take so much of Mike Lupica). It is representative of how most guys debate sports. Besides, any show where a guest can get bonus points for striking a "b-boy stance" is ok in my book

I like Around the Horn, but it's not a show that I'm making an effort to watch it. I do like Max Kellerman as a host, I think he does a good job, but it gets sidetracked a lot.
I guess the difference is that if I'm watching PTI, I'll stick around through a segment that I don't care about to see one I like, but on Around the Horn, I might just change the channel.

I'll watch it b/c it's the only thing on when I get home after work. Would I say that I loved the show? No. But it has it's moments, most of them being Kellerman busting on Mariotti and Paige (what nimrods).

While it is no PTI, I have grown to like, if not love ATH. Kellerman has shown he knows more than just boxing, and most of the reporters are good. I really appreciate Paige. I might not always agree with him, but he is entertaining.

So today 8-15 on Around the Horn, this "StatBoy" person from PTI was the substitute host for Kellerman (who apparently was stuck in the NYC blackout).
So was Statboy an improvement?
Or equally obnoxious?
Or has ESPN managed to find someone even worse than Maxie?

This is the first time I've seen stat boy sub (though I know he's done it in the past) and he was pretty good. I liked the fact he held a grudge against Holley for beating him last week.
