crappy pilots, great shows overall?
What shows started off on a bad note but got progressivly better as the show went on? the only one I can think of is Kingpin, I personally didn't find it all that confusing but many did, and most liked the series overall.

I can't think of any, although the pilot of "Kingpin" kept me from watching any more episodes. They could have been great for all I know, but I doubt it.

I will tell you, 90% of pilots, looked at after the whole series has run it's course look dated and unfunny. senfeld (sp) comes to mind.
Over all, the show needs time to produce that comdey gold that it does produce.

Pilots or premieres?
If you mean pilots, making a list would likely crash the forum. So many pilots aren't even made to be complete episodes that a comparison isn't even valid.
If you mean premieres, you can start with 99% of what is called "genre" programming (science fiction, fantasy, horror, etc). So many of these shows are pushing the envelope of the proverbial "box" that it takes a while to get up and running. An example would be Babylon 5, where the introductory telefilm showed promise but was pretty darn bad, particularly in comparison to what would follow.
For more mainstream programming, I've never liked 'Mexican Slayride', the premiere telefilm for The A-Team. A lot of the concept is there, and you get the feeling the show will rock, but it's still uneven, Colonel Lynch isn't half as cool as Decker, and Tim Dunigan is a crappy Face.

If we're talking premieres the first one that came to my mind was Firefly. All the credit for that goes to the morons that "run" Fox.

How about Seinfeld. The first few Seinfelds were really bad if I recall.
Frankly, there are probably hundreds of shows that improved from their pilot stage and 1st season.

I thought the first episode of Alias sucked hard, and if it weren't for the fact that it didn't have commercial breaks I would have changed the station first one. I have caught some episodes here and there, and they seem to have rebounded rather well.
