And most of all what I don't get is how Allison Janney was bumped to Best Actress in Drama (as last year.) The four supporting actors get as much screen time as she does. And to think. She beat out both contenders from Six Feet Under last year.

I sure hope 24 and The Shield gets recognized for their sheer brilliance. Their seasons are getting better. Let's hope it stays that way.
24 not winning "Drama" and Michael Chiklis not getting "Lead Actor, Drama Series" would be a crime...

Agreed 100%. Criminal. I don't even know why that other crap got nominated in the first place. I mean, none of those other shows had a lead character get stuck in a cougar trap ... in LA. The amnesia plot was strong, maybe the strongest in television history, but even it was eclipsed by the sheer brilliance of this season.

I love 24 but I don't think it deserves to win best drama this year. Last season was much stronger (cougars man, what the hell was that!) But I do think that Haysbert was robbed of a nomination, his performance was one of the saving graces of the 2nd season. I'm voting for Six Feet Under to win that category.
#57
Sarcasm aside, Haysbert's performance in both seasons was nothing short of perfect. Along with Kiefer, he helped drag that show from often silly to often compelling. Looking at the list, though, I'm not sure whose spot he deserves. Perhaps Gandolfini who has had better seasons and plenty of nods, but it's really a toss-up. The category's way too deep for just 5 nominees. Hopefully Haysbert will get some recognition soon.

Well, Haysbert is a supporting character on 24 and would be more deserviong than just about anyone on that list (save Victor Garbor). The same goes for Neil McDonnagh on Boomtown. Those omissions were stunning.
I mentioned this in aother thread : Six Feet Under seasons two and three were both during this eligebility period, so I don't know for which season it's being nominated. If Rachel Griffeths is nominated for Best Lead Actress, that's gotta be from season two, right?
For me the battle to watch is Best Actor Drama. Gandolfini vs Chicklis vs Peter Krause. That will be a fun one to watch, no doubt.

I'm not sure who I'd bump from supporting either. Imperioli and Pantoliano were fantastic as usual, even moreso this season, and Spencer's been incredible from day one. As for Whitford, his performance in the VP episode last season was just demanding an Emmy. Even though the writing across television has gone down a bit this last year, the acting talent is as good as it's ever been.

I'm pretty sure I corrected this in another thread too, but I'm pretty sure the only episode of season 2 of SFU that is eligible for the Emmys this year is the season finale. Several episodes from season 2 were already nominated last year.

Well, you're right. Only the final episode from season 2 passed into the eligibility period. I also made another mistake, Rachel Griffiths is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. She's worthy, but I'd prefer Lauren Ambrose.
As far as the supporting actor nods, I'll have to disagree with das. I'm a huge fan of Christopher, but Michael Imperioli didn't have much to do this season,
, good, but not spectacular. I've been a fan of Joe Pantoliano dating back to Risky Business and Midnight Run, but I always felt he detracted from the Sopranos, bringing his movie persona to the small screen and not meshing well with the regulars (almost like the "Special Guest Star" appearences on Will & Grace).
das, I know you weren't too impressed with Boomtown, but did you get to see "Blackout"? Neil McDonough does, easily, some of the best work seen on television this season.

I won't overly disagree with you here. I thought Christopher's decent was well done, and I just really liked the way Ralph got under everyone's skin, but I wouldn't be upset to see others get nods in their places. I can certainly see your perspective.

Not sure where you got the idea that I wasn't impressed with the show; in fact, I think I've defended it a lot. I don't think it's the best show on television as some seem to believe and felt it stumbled around a bit, but by no means did I not enjoy it. My main issue with it would be the mixed signals on its promotion. It claimed to be one thing but gave us something else most of the time. As a straight cop show, it was damn good. As a "different views of the crime" show, it was too forced most of the time. I did see all the episodes, and if I can ever finish up this Top Episode list, I believe it will be represented fairly. McDonough was incredible in those final episodes.

i didnt know that until i saw in the animated catgory listed individual episodes.

I am probably all wrong, but:
I believe the Academy votes for the nominations. Whichever five (six in some cats) have the most votes get the nominations.
After that all I know (or I think I know) are the acting categories. The Leading Actors/Actresses pick the episode they believe shows their strongest performance while Supporting Actors/Actresses pick the top two episodes they believe show their strongest performances. And from those episodes the Academy picks the winner.
I find that to be total crap. That is why I don't take the Emmys for more than they are worth. Judging only one or two shows of an actor gets nowhere really.
Let me know if I am wrong. I am usually.
------
Comedy has the worst time. A lot of the actors in a comedy cateogry 9 times out of 10 pick their most dramatic episode. Sometimes it works in their favor. Most of the time not.

She was very good for most of the season. But some of the other nominees deserve a shot too. Edie has already won twice. I don't want to see her pull Candice Bergman/Helen Hunt year after year. I think Frances Conroy should win this year.

As long as Allison Janney doesn't win again, I'll be happy in either case.

The problem with Falco is that this season was likely her best of them all, particularly in the finale. It's unfortunate for the other great actresses that her mantle is already overflowing with awards, but taking this season on its own merits, I find it hard to even consider giving the award to someone else. The other 4 women are great, but she was in another league this year.
