So I've been watching the show and their job seems like a lot of fun. And now, I'm wondering, what exactly is required of you to work in CSI? For what its worth I have a BA in Mathematics. Anyone know? I would imagine you'd need some type of science degree, chem, biochem, etc...

I wouldn't base anything on the show. It might be a fun field to get into, but the show certainly doesn't portray it realistically.

what you see on either show, in no way, represents the field of Crime Scene Investigator. In real life, they are merely evidence collectors and interpreters. They do no interrogating. They do not usually carry guns. They don't run around with the Detectives helping them to solve the crime. They work in a lab and do that stuff. The lab stuff on the show is pretty realistic, from what I hear.

As for what kind of degree you'd need, I'd suggest any school that offers a specialty of forensic science, or any life science like biology or chemistry.

I don't think CSI people actually solve the crimes; isn't that more of a job for the police.

The two CSI shows portray their profession about as realistically as Murder She Wrote portrayed the life of being a novelist.

Obviously, realism is not that important to the viewing public considering that these are/were #1 shows.

You basically need a flashlight and a square jaw.

I don't think there is anything "Fun" about it..

What the show fails to show us is how repetitive or boring their jobs are.

They sometimes show this - like when they had to tag and photograph every bullet hole when that machine gun went off in the warehouse. Uhhhhhhh!!! I could never do that .

Or put together a plate glass window.

It think this is what they do.. not "fun" to me but to someone else - Go for it

The last time that I saw a REAL CSI in action, they were in a rusted Ford Aerostar, not a Hummer or a Yukon. I was thinking about the same thing about the profession too. The CSI that we are watching on TV makes it look fun because of all the toys that they get. I doubt the real deal has any of it. If you remember anything from the O.J. case, CSI failed... the DA should have called Grissom.
