On Happy Days, Richie's older brother Chuck was played by not 1, not 2, but THREE different actors during the first season. He was then unceremoniously written out of the show only to leave us to wonder if Chuck really did exist in the first place.

David Ackroyd originated the role of Gary Ewing on "Dallas", but Ted Shackelford continued the role on "Knots Landing". Really took me a long time to get used to Ted.

Re: characters played by more than one actor?
Actually George Jefferson was only played by Sherman Hemsley. They did have another actor, Mel Stewart, on All in the Family when the Jeffersons first moved in, but he played Henry Jefferson, George's brother. The producers wanted Sherman Hemsley for the role of George and he wasn't available at the time so they brought in Mel Stewart to play his brother for a few episodes until Sherman Hemsley became available. It was strange that his brother Henry was never seen or mentioned again even on The Jeffersons.

No doubt. The fact that it was 9 years ago is strange. But that it was by someone who has been a member for nearly 5 years and hasn't posted since that time makes it extra-bizarre.
Fill us in, rycki. What brought you back to address the long-standing George Jefferson quandary? Also, we've missed you.

Nine years later this post serves a purpose ... I now understand the "Jimmy was Chuck Cunningham'd" post in the Walking Dead threads. I honestly never knew this.

George Jefferson was played by 2 actors
Lionel Jefferson ws played by 2 actors... One Lionel was kinda uptight(Jefferson's show) and the other was cool(Original Lionel from All in the Family).
slightly off topic but not really...ON M*A*S*H, Harry Morgan played two different characters: He played a crazy General( I think) and Col Potter later in the series

anyway to add to the list. the daughter on 'Till Death was played by several actors even from one ep to the next and it became a running bit on the show that was noticed by one character and no one believed him.

Jackie's mom on That 70s Show. She was in one episode early in the series where she was a real estate agent and the gang had a party in one of her empty houses. Later in the series she was played by Brooke Shields.
