Doug - when all else fails, hit the books! I have the two official Watcher's Guides for Buffy and the offical Monster Book. In it they speak of how Joss did flesh out the Master's background even though they never used it. The master is 600 years old and definitely not the first vampire. It also says that ancient and evil vamps become more demonic as time goes by. So, if that is the Master, which I'm still doubting ;), they've just messed up their official books. Being as this isn't Trek, that's not the norm.

The next new episode of Buffy will be on December 17th. Here is the TV Guide description (it sounds awesome!):

Spoiler:

Bring On the Night
60 min.
As the Scoobies research the orgins of the First to find a way to rescue Spike, Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) arrives with reinforcements---three apprentice Slayers.
Also: Buffy is rattled when her mother (Kristine Sutherland) offers advice in her dreams.

Spoiler:
"Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) arrives with reinforcements---three apprentice Slayers."

Hrm. What could that mean? Who was it that attacked Giles? How did he escape? Or did he? How do the three apprentice slayers tie in with whoever is killing off the slayers-in-training?

And I'm going to have to stop reading spoilers/previews/guides because I've only seen the first two seasons on DVD! I won't even see the third season until January. But I love the show so much, I just can't stay away...

Potential huge-assed Giles spoiler here: http://www.spoilerslayer.com/buffyblog.php

Spoiler:

From the script: "Note: It is VERY important that Giles not touch or be touched by anything. He can walk and talk-- but he can't fiddle or cuddle or caress. Got it?"

YIKES!

My thoughts/predictions:

1. The Council is all but destroyed. I think that was pretty clear (even though the effects were a bit shoddy)

2. The principal was being controlled. He walked past the door, then seemed to respond to a call or something. No expressions at all. Maybe another sleeper?

3. The sacrifice of Jonathan wasn't enough. They needed more blood to open the portal. Since "Morphy" couldn't hurt anything itself, and it's minions weren't there yet, it tried to use Andrew to get more blood. When that failed, they captured Spike. Not sure why it HAD to be Spike, but I imagine that will come up later.

4. The First Evil and The Real Vampire are two different things. The hellmouth portal opened, and a real vampire (not a human/demon that we've seen all along) came out. I imagine there will either be more things coming or more vampires. I don't think the vampire is the real "big bad" (Buffy kills him and it's over seems way too easy.)

5. Giles will take the remanants of the Watchers and the Slayers-In-Training and help Buffy fight The First Evil.

These are just predictions based on the episode. I don't read spoilers so I have no idea if any of this is true.

I think what they were going for was they needed a vampire's blood to summon the first evil or first vampire. Isn't there a new episode on 12/17? Overall, I think this is the strongest season since number 3.
