IIRC, Back in the old days, BBC used to lease it to PBS stations a Doctor at a time. However, they had to buy them each in a package with the 4th Doctor's series. So if you bought Doctors 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 you'd have 5 copies of Tom Baker's series That's what the PBS stations used to explain during pledge drives while explaining what an expensive series it was to air.
Anyway, I bet BBCAmerica gets it. I just wish BBCA would vary their promos occasionally. It seems like there is the same break every 10 minutes over and over again.

And the Doctor is....
The Doctor is in....
... And its Christopher Eccleston!
Star of Second Coming, 28 Days Later and a whole host of great roles!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...io/3552087.stm
and
http://www.gallifreyone.com/newstv.php
Also the writers were announced a while ago:
Paul Cornell (Casualty)
Rob Shearman (Born and Bred)
Mark Gatiss (League of Gentlemen)
Steven Moffat (Coupling) (2 episodes)
Russell T Davies will write the rest.
Whats great about this list is that everyone of these writers have won awards in the UK. And as a bonus, every one of them are MAJOR Doctor Who fans. Each of them has written for Doctor Who professionally in one capacity or another [ie novels, radio, audio, short stories, ect]. And (although not all fans agree... when has that ever happened
), the stories they have done already for Doctor Who are generally regarded as some of the best ever done.
To put this in perspective. Imagine the first season of ST:TNG with the following line up (John Ford, Diane Duane, John DeChanice, Peter David, ect) and you'd have an idea of just how good this lineup is.

I just saw the announcement over at Outpost Gallifrey. This is wonderful news. This truly feels like the BIG push for Doctor Who that us fans have been waiting for, and it appears that the BBC is finally committing to a big project to bring it back.... with quality actors and writers. There's even a rumor going on right now about Audrey Tautou being a guest star. Not sure how reliable that is yet. I just can't wait until 2005, and hope one of the U.S stations here pick it up and air it close to the U.K dates.

And what about McGann, damnit!? A whole generation will now be wasted on one ****ing story! I'd really like to be excited about this but as with anything brought back these days, I will reserve judgement until I see what they do. For now, I'll put on my 17' long scarf and sit in the corner.

I have a feeling that this will be quite different to the old classic series. Of course, the Doctor and TARDIS will be there- as well as the essential elements of time travel and fighting strange monsters. But such things as the Doctor's capacity to love.... I don't mind that at all. With the announcement of Eccleston as the lead actor, there have been rumors flying all over the place... such as a 1 million pound budget PER EPISODE !!! That's a heck of a lot of money. This is a different era. As long as it seeks to interest both children and adults, then it's ok with me. Actually, I hope it doesn't try to just satisfy the interests of the die-hard fans. We need a new audience for this.

No Daleks in Doctor Who's return
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3552913.stm
Kind of a bummer.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3552913.stm
The BBC has confirmed the Daleks will not appear in its new Doctor Who series after a failure to agree terms.
Talks between the BBC and the estate of late sci-fi writer Terry Nation, who created the Daleks, broke down over issues of editorial control.
A BBC spokeswoman said: "After lengthy negotiations, the BBC and Terry Nation have been unable to reach an agreement on the terms of the use of the Daleks."
The Terry Nation estate said it was "bitterly disappointed".
The metal monsters were voted TV's most evil villains in a poll last year.
We are disappointed that the Daleks will not be included but we have a number of new and exciting monsters
Writer Russell T Davies
Fans had hoped to see the Daleks' return in the series, scheduled for release on BBC One in early 2005, but feared copyright issues might stand in the way.
The BBC spokeswoman said: "The BBC offered the very best deal possible but ultimately we were not able to give the level of editorial influence that the Terry Nation estate wished to have."
But an agent for the Nation estate accused the BBC of ignoring copyright laws and said the corporation was trying to "ruin the brand of the Daleks".
Agent Tim Hancock, who represents the Nation estate, said: "We wanted the same level of control over the Daleks that we have enjoyed for the last 40 years.
"If the BBC wanted to re-make any of George Lucas' films, you can bet George Lucas would have something to say about it. "
Mr Hancock accused the BBC of lying about the reasons a deal had not been made.
He said the BBC had tried to commission a cartoon series about gay Daleks for BBC Three.
He also said the corporation had allowed Warner Bros to use the Daleks in the recent movie Loony Tunes without consulting the Terry Nation estate.
"We want to protect the integrity of the brand," he said.
Mr Hancock said the estate would be willing to make a new deal if the BBC accepted the arrangement that had been in place for the last 40 years.
Writer Russell T Davies said he was "disappointed" by the decision but it would not affect the success of the series.
He said: "We are reinventing Doctor Who for a 21st Century audience with a fantastic writing team and exciting new challenges.
Billie Piper will play the Doctor's assistant Rose Tyler
"We are disappointed that the Daleks will not be included but we have a number of new and exciting monsters.
"And I can confirm we have created a new enemy for the Doctor which will keep viewers on the edge of their seats."
As Doctor Who's sworn enemies, the Daleks were voted the most evil villains on television in a vote by more than 3,000 GMTV viewers in 2003.
Christopher Eccleston, star of films like Shallow Grave and The Others, has been confirmed as the new Doctor Who.
Former pop star Billie Piper has been chosen to play his sidekick Rose Tyler.

Well, I see the Daleks not coming back as a GOOD thing. Well, for one we already have a story with
, so doing a Dalek story would mean that 2 of the 13 stories would be returning bad guys. That's the same sort of thinking that got the show in trouble in the late 80's - too much Daleks, Cybermen, Master, Omega, Sea Devils and not enough originality.
Also this gives the show a high profile boost for season two now (assuming that the rights can be hammered out). We already have enough hype to sustain the show for season 1 - lets save the media feeding frenzy from the Dalek return for later.

Re: Doctor Who - back on the air!
From Outpost Gallfrey:
Although Davies says he wants to 'introduce the character to a modern audience', Lorraine Heggessey, the controller of BBC1, insisted yesterday that she did not expect a gay Doctor Who."

Doctor Who : new logo and promo image
BBC have released the new logo for the new Doctor Who 2005 (Starring Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor and Billie Piper as his sexy companion) and the first promo image for the show. Pretty exicting stuff, I can't wait to see it. Best Sci Fi series ever!

It's great to have Doctor Who back.
Still sort of curious about Eccleston, how he'll play the part. The best Doctors have been a little loopy, and I hope he pulls it off. He looks sort of "Tranispotting" or "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" in that promo pic.

I'm so excited.... can't wait until March 2005. I'm such a huge fan that I might time my vacation to England to coincide with the premier, so I can watch it there instead of waiting for it to come to the US. (god knows whenever that is).

Looks like it's being marketed as mainstream. Doesn't do much for me. I'm sure the show will be very good though. Doctor Who changes all the time, and I've enjoyed almost all of it.

I'd say, if you want Indian, Naveen Andrews ("English Patient" and currently on "Lost") wouldn't be a bad choice.
For a black Doctor... trying to think of an Englishman who could fit the bill. Maybe the guy who played Adebisi on "Oz?"
My first pick would've been Eddie Izzard... a transvestite Doctor would've been a hoot.
