Posted by Spooky
Problem is, we'll probably never get to see this in the United States. Now.. I'm just wondering who's gonna play the new Doctor Who character for this upcoming TV series. I suggest ROWAN ATKINSON! :P |
Problem is, we'll probably never get to see this in the United States. And/Or Kaaza!! :) I hope they keep Paul McGann at least have him die in the beginning to keep some level of continuity. I wonder how the expected Dr. Who cartoon (radio show?) will interact with this? If that project is even still continuing... |
Originally posted by Chew I think BBCAmerica is a pretty good bet. That or we all move to England. |

Maybe NBC can pick it up, recast the series, and air it on Thursday nights?
• Quoth Regurgitator •
Maybe it'll be on the Sci-Fi channel or any other popular channels like UPN.

Oh, God. Don't even joke about that. das |

Originally posted by Regurgitator Maybe it'll be on the Sci-Fi channel or any other popular channels like UPN. Yeah...UPN could use an intelligent, entertaining science fiction show - they don't have any on the current schedule. |
Can't wait.

Here's the official BBC press release, BTW:
Doctor Who returns to BBC ONE Doctor Who, one of the BBC's best-loved and most enduring characters, is set to return to BBC ONE, it was confirmed last night by Lorraine Heggessey, Controller of BBC ONE. Heggessey said that all rights issues regarding Doctor Who have been resolved and that she has green-lit scripts from award-winning writer Russell T Davies. It is far too early in the day to discuss possible storylines, characters, villains or who might play the Time Lord - it is unlikely anything will be on screen for at least two years. Doctor Who will be produced by BBC Wales in conjunction with Mal Young, Controller of BBC Continuing Series. The executive producers will be Mal Young, Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner, Head of Drama BBC Wales. Russell T Davies's writing credits include Bob and Rose, Queer as Folk, The Second Coming, Touching Evil (with Paul Abbott) and The Grand. Mal Young says: "Doctor Who is a much-loved, truly iconic piece of television history. It's time to crank up the Tardis and find out what lies in store for The Doctor. "We're thrilled to have a writer of Russell's calibre to take us on this journey. However, we're at the very first stages of development and further details, including casting, will not be available for some time." Writer Russell T Davies, who grew up in Swansea and lives in Manchester, says: "I grew up watching Doctor Who, hiding behind the sofa like so many others. Doctor Who is one of the BBC's most exciting and original characters. He's had a good rest and now it's time to bring him back! "The new series will be fun, exciting, contemporary and scary. Although I'm only in the early stages of development, I'm aiming to write a full-blooded drama which embraces the Doctor Who heritage, at the same time as introducing the character to a modern audience." No budget has been set for the new series; the number of episodes and their duration is under discussion. It will be a family show, but no details are available as to when it will be scheduled. |
I also knew this day would come eventually!
I can't wait! :D |
Okay, nostalgia value aside, could we just be honest and at least admit that the original Dr Who series' were absolute cheesey, cheap, badly acted, camp crap? Just a thought........

could we just be honest and at least admit that the original Dr Who series' were absolute cheesey, cheap, badly acted, camp crap? chessey? maybe... what does cheesy mean... if it means fun and not taking yourself seriously, then yes, it was cheesy, so what. cheap? yeah, it had a low budget... so what? that doesn't make it bad... I'd rather have a show with a low budget abd good stories and acting than a show with a huge budget and fancy special effects and crap stories *cough* Star Trek *cough* badly acted? No, it actually had some of the best actors around. Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton... bad actors? I dont think so. camp crap? crap, no, camp yes... thats why we love it. |
Yeah, okay......
"Exterminate, exterminate, exterminate!" |
turborobb, I must have misread your post. You did not just use Star Trek as a counterexample to a low-budget show with great stories. You might want to rephrase that.

Im watching "Spearhead From Space" right now on DVD. amazing. Doctor Who is the best sci fi TV series ever. Cant wait for thr new series.

I tried to find the Doctor Who DVD thread under the normal DVD Talk section but couldn't find it.
Anyway... I just got the new Dalek Invasion of Earth and Talons of Wang Chaing DVDs...... awesome!!! Best Buy (for some reason) had all the Oct 7th TV DVD releases out early, not only Doctor Who, but Farscape and Beastmaster. The disks are amazing! both double DVD sets with a full second disk full of extras... I spent 2 hours tonight watching the extra stuff and I am still barely half way done... and I haven't even touched the actual episodes. Great interviews and behind the scenes footage. Awesome to see a 20+ year old TV show blow new TV show DVDs, like Buffy and Trek away. They cost a bit more, but I'd pay double for this kind of work... just awesome! Doctor Who rules!!!!!! |
And the new Doctor Who could be.....Eddie Izzard!?! Seems to be a possiblility. Check it out. But then all this may just stirring up because Tom Baker said Izzard would make a good Doctor.
A few days ago, someone linked this story on Fark and someone posted this ideal exchange: Eddie Izzard's Doctor vs. Rowan Atkinson's Master... Master: Now, Doctor... now you shall die. Doctor: Oh yeah? Master: Oh yes. Doctor: Oh yeah? Master: (nods head knowingly) Doctor: (shakes head, then quickly nods with a bit of fear in his eye, then quickly shakes head again as if to ward off the notion) Master: (nods again, but with a raised eyebrow and slight smile) Doctor: (seeing this, nods head again slightly with a little more fear, but then shakes head again with a slight wave of his hand) Master: (nods more, but with a bit of resignation of the impending doom of his foe) Doctor: (stops shaking head, pauses, then runs away with his trademark feather boa drifting lazily to the ground where he was standing) Master: (rolls eyes and lets out a small sigh at the prospect of chasing after the Doctor)Oh, ghod. Of course, an Atkinson Master would have to have Tony Robinson as his assistant. |
Figures - posts like these while I was away at Disneyland for a week. . . .
Originally posted by SouthAfricanGuy Okay, nostalgia value aside, could we just be honest and at least admit that the original Dr Who series' were absolute cheesey, cheap, badly acted, camp crap? Just a thought........ Cheap? Of course. What other show has cardboard cutouts of their badguys in the backgrounds of some scenes to pad out the ranks? Badly acted? Exhibit A: "NothING in ZE wolrd will ZTOP ME NOW!" I'd call that a big yes. Camp? In places - especally towards the end of the run (before the McCoy era, tho). Crap. Hardly - the above factors are why the show is so endering to the fans. Well, that and the characterization, the storys and the razor sharp writing. |
More cool news:
There'll be at least one important difference, though, between the programme's 20th and 21st-century incarnations. The new Doctor Who will be one of the BBC's flagship programmes. Davies and his co-conspirator, Mal Young, Controller of Continuing Drama Series, have secured a commitment to five series of 13, 45-minute episodes. They'll be able to afford an expensive actor for the lead role. They'll get billboard ads, Radio Times covers and publicity spots across the media. The original programme rarely enjoyed such security. It's barely even getting started and already has a five year commitment! |
Originally posted by Chew It's barely even getting started and already has a five year commitment! My god thats insane! This would never EVER happen in america! Even with a proven property (like say Star Trek at the height of it's powers) you would never see a deal like that. And Scream of the Shakla has been getting a major push on all fronts too. It's getting network ads in some prime time slots, from what I understand. 2005 cant get here soon enough. |
I just fear it'll be based marketed and we'll end up with some Seven of Nine character and a show like Enterprise.
|
Does anyone know if it will be airing in the states yet?
|
Could someone offer a quick synopsis of what this show was about? I remember watching portions of this when I was very young and pretty much remember just the phone booth although I don't remember what purpose it served. I also remember the Dr. Who character being played by different actors at different times.

A brief rundown of the show:
The Doctor is exiled and/or rogue Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. He travels time and space in the TARDIS, which is in the shape of a british Police Call Box because the circutry that allowed the Tardis to change it's shape and blend in to it's surroundings became stuck. (A Call Box, BTW, is a device in the 60's that was used to summon police, lock up criminals and act as a tempory mini-police station. They were mostly phased out in the late 70's and early 80's, eventually seeing a return to service in the last couple of years) Time Lords have the ability to regenerate upon their deaths, allowing for several actors to play the Doctor. When one actor finishes his run, he passes the torch to the new one and the series can continue. Along the way, the Doctor has picked up dozens of companions - people from earth's history (and future) who serve the plot by getting captured by monsters and saying "What is it, Doctor?" There's tons of other subtle points to the show, but that about covers all the main items. |
ah thanks. It all makes sense now. :)
