Def Poetry

I've been meaning to start a discussion about this show, and I keep forgetting about it.

Anyone been watching it? I try to catch it every week, and I must admit I'm amazed at some of the talent that these performers have. Granted, some of the speakers are as cliche as an episode of Full House, but the majority are very, very good.

Anyone else watching?

I like the show when they have poets on there doing poetry...not rappers on there rapping.

Yeah some of the rappers and some of the "look how oppressed I am" jokers are pretty weak. Also, you can tell some of these people try too hard to be "deep." But those who really are ... damn. Makes me think of Kurdy's poem from Jeremiah this season. Powerful ****.

I've seen a grand total of one episode. I need Tivo or somethin'. Yes, it is an excellent show. Does Mos Def host it, or do they have a guest host each week?

Mos Def hosts and at the end introduces Russell Simmons who says something trite and lame before rolling the credits.

That's Russ' trademark ending and it started on the DEF JAM comedy. "We love you, Gawd Bless" or "thanks for comin' out, we love you, Gawd bless".

It's pretty funny.

I like the show... even the rappers.

For me to say that is a big step because I hold most "poets" and poetry in the same light as MIMES.
