Warning: Hippie sighting!

I really enjoyed this episode.
Spoiler:
The majority of this episode seemed to focus on Ruth and her differences (isolation) and similarities deep down inside. Frederico was also given more than his usual screen time, as I liked his end of the episode.

Oh yeah, to quote Rico, "What the f***'in f***!"

I, too, really enjoyed this episode.

The actress who plays Ruth is excellent and can really carry her emotions well, when you know her character is keeping them buried.

Okay the whole Federico "thing" came as a big suprise!

Glad to see Keith is wanting more out of David.

Next week's episode: The dad is back! YES! My favorite character, BTW.

Dammit, they got me again.

The scene w/ Brenda and the random guy in the van....I was completely fooled and it's been a long time since the show was able to pull one over on me.

I loved this episode for a number of reasons, mostly because they finally seemed to be back on track with the little things in dialog that make the show so good.

1: Brenda in presenting the cactus to her mom: I got you this as a gift...you don't have to water it, feed it or even take care of it at all.

2: Prostitute friend: Oh God, you aren't one of those couples that argue infront of friends, making them feel uncomfortable so they leave so you can ****, are you?

3: The Frederico quote above.

hatred is a strong word, the one I dislike most is the mom. I know all revolves around her, but she needs to just be happy, I know too many people like her though which is sad.

Be like the jewish lady said, live each day so you can do all you can

I liked it when Ruth was telling her friend to "shut up" - LOL!

While I agree that Ruth has created the situation that she is in now, but I also think that her children *do* take her for granted. She cooks for them, cleans for them, but they treat her like a nuisance. A little appreciation and respect from the kids would not be that much to ask for.

I for the first time watched this show I think it's good.

I came in on the dinner where the aunt was telling everyone abuot how the one guy lost his virginity to a 32 year old while staying with her.

Ah...this is a bit more like it for a 6FU episode. There were plenty of good tidbits and insight into all of the characters in this episode:

Nice opening death. I loved the way Brenda summed up the death by auto-eroticism/asphyxiation, and the pop cultural reference to Michael Hutchence (I think that's who Rico was referring to).

Ruth - while feeling isolated from her children, and Nikkolai being grumpy, she finally consciously rids herself of the "My life as a house" metaphors. The dinner scene was a hoot as her flower shop bud just drones on and on.

Claire - saw a totally different side of not only her aunt, but her father through the eyes of her aunt's guests for the weekend. Not too crazy about the 19 year old guy. Bringing home the "Sarah's Songs" tape and watching her mom re-live a bit of her youth was a nice touch. We often forget how powerful songs/music can be in triggering past memories (good/bad).

David - what a snit, but understandable given Keith's treatment of him, but for a guy pining away for Keith, at least he wasn't going to take any crap from Keith. Good thing Keith had a legitimate excuse in his no-show at the restaurant. Keith's a mess, maybe too much for David at this point in his life (taking care of his niece and still dealing with his use of his firearm a few months ago).

Nate - always seems to have a dark cloud hanging over him due to his brain condition. I found it quite humorous he was trying to "make time" with the female rabbi (I found her quite attractive as well). Perhaps we'll see her again. I really don't see Nate marrying Brenda, their love-making made it seem like they were so far away from each other while being so close in proximity.

Brenda - her relationships with screwed up people just keep piling up. Melissa (hooker) has opened up a very naughty side of Brenda's. The fantasy sequence was well-done for an audience fake-out. That cactus as a house-warming gift was classic Brenda. The dichotomy of seeing Brenda's mom reject Brenda's "help" definitely contrasts well with Ruth's isolation from her children. There doesn't to be much common ground in between for these parent/children relationships.

Rico - hahahaha! The writer did a great job building up the audience expectations for his wife to be cheating on Rico with his cousin/contractor, and then pulling the rug out from under the audience. To quote Rico "What the F-ing F-F!?!" summed up the situation perfectly.

All in all, I thought it was quite a solid episode, setting in motion for more character development.

It's about damn time dad gets back into the series! How many episodes has it been since we last saw him? This was actually a very good episode even though dad wasn't in it. The Rico/cousin thing was a spin probably none of us would have thought of. Glad to see Rico getting some face time on the show.

I have a feeling this may be Brenda's last year on the show. Unless something drastic happens and Nate actually opens up to her, I don't see them getting married or having any sort of normal relationship. It sounded to me like Nate wanted to hook up with the rabbi. I would think Brenda would learn from her mother and fathe about their marriage before jumping into it with Nate.

Altogether a good episode and the glue (dad) will be back next week...woohoo!

I think this is going to be quite huge in coming weeks - finally Rico will get a decent storyline instead of just bitching about how much money he doesn't make at Fisher and Sons.

The thing I wanted to get people's opinions on was this - do you think Rico's wife Vernessa knows about his brother? The chummy familiarity witnessed by the suspicious Rico in the beginning of the episode made me wonder.

Of course since Rico is pretty much the most homophobic character we've met on the show, we can probably expect him to lash out at David somehow or at least angrily question him about the lifestyle that his brother seems to share with his married life. Rico is headed for some SERIOUS character development.

I think the opposite - Brenda stands as the character with the more complicated running storylines. Billy has to come back into the picture. We still only VAGUELY know much about her background. The plot about her parents divorce/separation (which she is keeping secret from Nate) is just at the beginning of something that could have MAJOR ramifications on her psyche. There is the "slippery slope" of this firsty-hand experience thing she is dabbling with to get into writing her book. Plus since Rachel Griffiths was the only actor on the show to win a Golden Globe for her role - expect the producers to fight to keep her around (they certain have enough different, juicy places for her character to go!).

I LOVE the few moments we've had with Ruth and Claire in the past two weeks. Slowly but surely something is going to blow the barrier between them apart, and I think it will be Claire that initiates it. As far as the 19 year-old she met this week, I'll take him over Gabe Deamus any day!

No kidding! That character really was bringing down the show in my opinion.
