Enterprise 3/20

So that's where Sahjhan's portal led to...

Anyway, I half-watched the episode and it was kind of cool. Uh, I really just wanted to post to make that sarcastic comment.

it was pretty decent
but next week will be funny
the ferengi
although it'll probably destroy continuity

although to be fair, while not much was known about the ferengi in the early seasons of TNG, I don't think they actually said first contact hadn't been made, after all, the ferengi were mentioned in Encounter at Farpoint

During Encounter At Farpoint, the Federation did not have any contact with the Ferengi, and all knowledge they had was myth and third-hand knowledge.

Episode summary ("Rogue Planet"):

Archer (after waking from a light snooze and seeing an apparition of a human female in a nightgown): But I saw it. It was real. I wasn't hallucinating. A human female. In a nightgown.

Trip: A human female? In a nightgown? You know you had to be hallucinatin'.

Archer: No. I saw it . . . uh . . . her. A human female. In a nightgown.

N'Pol: A human female? In a nightgown? That's illogical. You must have been hallucinating.

Archer: No. I saw it . . . uh . . . her. A human female. In a nightgown.

Holtz (er . . . Alien "hunter"): A human female? In a nightgown? You must have been hallucinating.

Archer: No. I saw it . . .

REPEAT AD INFINITUM

I'm guessing that at the most this episode had 10 pages of dialogue.

When, oh when will "Enterprise" start getting meaty? These one-off episodes are tiresome and slooooooooooow.

At least they didn't get into a big fistfight with the alien hunters.

Is it just me, or does Archer seem to be doing his best to either look foolish or piss off every alien race he meets? the diplomats who start the UFP are going to have their work cut out for them.

Frankly, I was bit confused by the inconsistency. In the episode on the planet where there were 2 intelligent forms of humanoid life and the more advanced one was becoming extinct, they decided to refrain from helping them because that would be interfering. However, in this episode, they helped the hunted species change something that naturally occurs within them. Now I understand the basic difference, but I still found it to be inconsistent.

Picard unknowingly encountered the Ferengi at least a decade or more before taking command of the Enterprise. But I think the Ferengis probably do something to the crews mind or else it would be the worst case of breaking continuity.

What is up with Enterprise's theme song? It just does not fit the Star Trek vibe to me. I mean singing?

I just was reminded of something
first contact with the Ferengi occured in 1947
true the gov't would have covered it up, but I'd say there's a good chance that once Cochrane built the warp drive the records, if they still existed, would have been released
so in a way Archer won't be only be renewing contact

I just caught this (the UPN station in town replays it on Sundays) and never quite understood why these slugs had any value to the hunters. Did I miss something?

I really found this one to be a major yawner. Didn't do a darn thing for me, or for character advancement.

I still find the physics of the rogue planet pretty ludicrous:

1. Vegatation on a planet without a sun?
2. Gravity just happens to be earth-like?
3. Time units for humans and hunters are the same?
4. Atmosphere just happens to be earth-like?

I found Tripp's photography of Archer to be the highlight of the show. That's pretty bad...

I have an explanantion for the plants having leaves
while true that th emain purpose of leaves is surface area to capture light for photosynthesis, they also funtion as a way for plants to exchange gases with the atmosphere
perhaps the plants were chemosynthetic, and the hot gas vents gave off some sort of non-toxic gas that the plants used to make food and the leaves were the means of gas exchange.

of course the real reason is that the writers of Enterprise know nothing about science
