most memorable (best) final episodes?

i was thinking about it on my drive in this morning...

what are some of the more memorable or better final episodes?

many shows get cancelled or not picked up, so they never get a chance to go out with a true final episode.. but some have, and were really good..

which ones were your favorite.. and not sure if its considered a spoiler, since most would be years old.. but give us the basic details of what happened in that final episode..

thinking back.. for some reason, fresh prince of bel air comes to mind

I was trying to remember the final episodes from cosby and cheers, but couldnt :(

I know I missed the final episode of quantum leap, and that sucks.. really need to catch that on sci fi sometime!

das Monkey 03-12-02 08:24 AM

I guess it should be obvious that there will be SPOILERS in here ...

Newhart probably had the best series finale of any show ever.

Other greats:
The Mary Tyler Moore Show (The Last Show)
Cheers (One for the Road)
St. Elsewhere (The Last One)
Quantum Leap (Mirror Image)
Babylon 5 (Sleeping in Light)
ST:TNG (All Good Things ...)
M.A.S.H. (Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen)

All of those make me shudder just thinking about how great they were.

Even though most people hated it, I thought the final episode for Seinfeld was brilliant.

I have to second the final episode for Newhart though...best...final episode...ever.

Red Dog 03-12-02 09:23 AM

MASH was probably the most memorable. Newhart had the best twist of all.

Mary Tyler Moore had a great ending where they all get fired except Ted.

Cheers had a nice send-off.

STTNG was a fitting conclusion - tied back to the premiere with Q.

Some of the worst include Seinfeld - perhaps the worst episode of the series. Dallas was particularly dissapointing since they ended on a cliffhanger (which they later tied up in the reunion movies). Benson also had a cliffhanger (the governor's race) which was never resolved.

RobCA 03-12-02 10:15 AM

Another vote for Newhart, and also Twin Peaks.
Spoiler:
"How's Annie?"

wm lopez 03-12-02 10:41 AM

HAPPY DAYS had the wedding.
MIAMI VICE they just drive off was o.k.

Groucho 03-12-02 11:13 AM

I wonder how tonight's finale of Undeclared will stack up?

bardevious 03-12-02 11:28 AM

I don't like it when shows try to wrap everything up in a nice neat little bundle to send the show off on its way. I prefer shows that end like "Cheers" or "Northern Exposure". There's a sense that life goes on, that the characters will still be there week in week out, even though the show itself will cease to be.

As for the final episode of "Cosby".....I believe it ended [I guess I should mention....SPOILER ALERT!]

with the Huxtables going to Theo's college graduation and Cliff successfully fixing the doorbell, after years of unsuccessful attempts at fixing things. It ends with Cliff and Claire dancing to the sound of the doorbell (not your normal doorbell chime, obviously, but an extended, melodious ringing off bells). Pretty good finale.

caiman 03-12-02 12:19 PM

I was never a fan of the show, but I recal being fairly impressed with the Mad About You finale.

PacMan2006 03-12-02 12:24 PM

I thought "The Wonder Years" finale was pretty good because it was so real. They didn't try and make everyone live happily ever after. It wasn't the best last show, but the last five to ten minutes were great. Needed more Paul, though.

B. H. 90210 (the last ep. was great 'cause it was finally over) :D

koomar 03-12-02 02:04 PM

MASH and Cheers were both better than expected.

I thought it was rather cool to watch the townsfolk blow up their own houses in the finale of "Little House on the Prairie".

For all of you old fogeys like myself out there, how did "Starsky & Hutch" end? I never saw it, but I've heard that they were both killed off in the final episode.

I agree with most said above...

I'll mention one nobody mentioned...

I remember liking the final episode of "Remington Steele"...

You finally found out what Remington's real name was... and he finally 'got it on' with Laura Holt.

The Fugitive(60's).

Oh yeah, Starsky and Hutch. Anyone know what happened in the final episode?

No contest:

Newhart and St. Elsewhere

IdgIe49 03-13-02 10:19 AM

Roseanne.

Geofferson 03-13-02 10:29 AM

Cheers is my favorite. Great ending.
I also like the ending to The Wonder Years.

bdshort 03-13-02 11:05 AM

Now that you've mentioned The Wonder Years, I'd have to say I'd agree. That was a very good, somewhat bittersweet ending. :)

What happened at the end of Newhart that made it so good? (since I've seen several people mention it). I've never seen the show, and dont even know what it was about, so maybe it'll require some explanation.

There's no way to do this finale justice, as IMO it is hands down the greatest finale ever, and it's unlikely anyone will ever come close to touching it.

But here's the general idea:

Spoiler:

Japanese investors show up at the Stratford and announce they are going to buy everything in town and build a huge golf course. One by one, everyone sells out except Dick, who stubbornly clings to his inn. There are some long goodbyes, but Dick as usual doesn't really care.

Time passes, and we see a future where the inn is in the middle of an elaborate golf course (people ducking at the call of "fore"), and the more things have changed, the more they've actually stayed the same. Everything has an Eastern feel to it, but the same "characters" are still there. Dick hates it, as always, and finally is ready to sell, but it's too late. One by one, the old townspeople show up for a reunion, and they realize how much they miss their old lives. They decide to all move in to the Stratford with Dick and spend the rest of their lives there but argue over who gets what room. At this point, Dick just can't take anymore, and he explodes in a rage, and storms out the door screaming at everyone. As he opens the door, he gets conked on the head with a golf ball. Fade out.

Everything gets fuzzy in "dream sequence" style, and he awakens in bed, and we realize it was all just a dream. How nice. And he nudges his wife and says, "you won't believe this crazy dream I just had." His wife sits up, but it's not Joanna - it's Emily from The Bob Newhart Show. She says, "what is it, Bob?" and he proceeds to tell her about his crazy dream ... he was an inn keeper in some strange Vermont town, and he details the crazy characters that made his life a living hell, and his beautiful wife. Emily is disinterested, tells Bob not to eat Japanese food before bed and goes back to sleep. She then realizes what he said and sits up and asks about the "beautiful wife." Bob dismisses it and tells her to go to sleep. Then he suggests she should try wearing more sweaters (like Joanna). Fade out ...

There were like 5 people in the world that knew this was happening, and most of the crew was shocked when Suzanne Pleshette sat up in bed. Among other things, it had been leaked to the press that Dick would "meet his maker" in this episode, and people expected a sad farewell and were completely caught off-guard. It's one of the truly great moments in television history, and I cannot imagine anything ever eclipsing it.

P.S. While an incredible feat, undermining a 35 year franchise with one 2 hour broadcast doesn't strike me as award-worthy.

I have always wondered as I never did watch Voyager regularly, how did the finale end?

Someone please fill me in on this.
