I was being sarcastic, but basicly they put fourth 1:50 minutes of tripe then used the last 10 minutes to end the series.

Someone please fill me in on this.

Note: I think this is the worst 2 hours in the history of the <I>Star Trek</I> franchise, so you will observe an obvious bias.

Spoiler:

So, in the tradition of stealing every decent plot from <I>TNG</I>, the finale involves time travel. However, instead of using it as a lesson from Q that humanity needs to think outside its current scope of understanding in order to grow in the Universe, this one is just selfish and stupid. In the future, <I>Voyager</I> takes forever to get home, and in the process 7 of 9 doesn't make it. Boo hoo. And Chakotay's all screwed up, because he was in love with 7. We know this because of the 2 forced episodes in the last season that serve no purpose but to establish some fake premise that 7 and Chakotay have a thing for each other. This was created out of nowhere and showed the complete lack of imagination by Braga and his team of idiots.

So, anyway, Janeway, in her finite wisdom comes up with a great idea. Screw all that morality crap we have in Starfleet ... she's going to go back in time and fix things. But, see, here's the cool part. First, she gets Barclay to help her (that would <I>never</I> happen). Then, she just hops on over to some Klingon friends who have a "time machine." Yeah, that's right ... no fancy slingshot around the sun ... she just needs to make nice with the Klingons to borrow their "time machine." Oh, but it gets better. She can't just go back in time and save 7. She outfits her ship with advanced shields and weaponry before going back in time. Meeting up with her former self, she fits Voyager with all the new weapons and technology, hunts down the Borg and destroys a major hive facility, essentially crippling their whole race. She then saves the day and helps the crew make it home safely. Aww ... isn't that sweet.

First, we'll ignore the paradox that if they make it home, she's never able to go back in time and help them make it home ... I can suspend disbelief enough to just accept the stupid plotline.

What I cannot accept is the blatant immorality of her risking people's lives (yeah, new people die in this alternate reality) to go back in time and save a fellow crew member because - boo hoo - she's not happy. Cry me a river. Combine that with the fact that she brought advanced weaponry from the future to destroy her enemy. Hello? Does Starfleet do this? No. We're supposed to be outraged that the Borg tried something like this with Earth in <B>First Contact</B>, but it's suddenly OK for us to do it to them? Yeah, great logic, Braga.

And all through this, her whole crew, many of whom should show some morality, even if she can't, just sit idly by thinking this is a grand ol' plan. Yay ... let's change the past to fit our own selfish motives. This finale completely sabotaged 35 years of Trek and nullified the existence of <I>Voyager</I> as a canon Trek series IMO. There have been plenty of time travel situations in Trek (way too many, in fact), and one or two border on the morality issue (<B>The Voyage Home</B>), but none of them involve selfish vengeance. Bringing a couple of whales into the future is a far cry from taking advanced technology back in time to destroy your enemy. Completely and totally disgraceful, and I have told Braga this to his face twice. He still doesn't get it.

Can you feel the love? :D

Wow, you have told this to his face? I'm related to Michael Piller and I can tell that he was not too happy about the way the series went after he left Star Trek, on bad terms too.

Yeah, I wasn't a dick about it or anything, but I told him how I felt. He still believes people hated the finale because nothing was resolved with the characters at the end. He just doesn't get it.

It seemed like Piller really got jerked around. I'd love to hear some insight from people closer to the situation.

As long as we're Trek-bashing ...

I am a long-time Star Trek fan. I consider the original Trek and the Next Generation to be true Star Trek. They are Gene Roddenberry's vision, and while they may not always be perfect, they are at least consistent, and show the program he wanted to tell.

Deep Sleep 9 and Snorager should never have been made. DS9 was made for one reason, and one reason only - oddly enough, two little words. "Created by" ... With each episode of TNG, Majel (Gene's widow) got money, because it was "created by" gene roddenberry.

"Based upon" = no payment. Majel does not receive the creator's fee for DS9/Voyager, but Rick and Michael do. Same with Enterprise, and Majel is not the voice of the computer in Enterprise, so zero money now.

Rick Berman does *NOT* know what Star Trek is. He is a "suit" ... He is under the impression that he can produce quality. Unfortunately, he puts the k in kwality.

Rick is the same man who, shortly after Gene's death, actually answered the question "What will happen now that Gene's gone?" with "Gene's dead. I'm in charge. Get over it" ....

I have no respect for the man, and as far as I am concerned, I would love for him to be removed from the position, have all forms of Trek taken off the air, and at least a two year window before ANY new Trek happens. In that time, find someone who has TALENT to write for them, and be in charge.

I would recommend Jeri Taylor. Jeri is an excellent writer, but is forced - as are the rest - to write with mittens on, for fear of messing up The Franchise.

Actually, I think we're just finale bashing. You may want to start a "B&B are Evil!" thread for us to discuss what has happened to the Trek franchise. We don't want to hijack this thread with too much random Trek stuff. :)

So, in an attempt to merge topics, while I really enjoyed a lot of <I>Deep Space Nine</I>, I thought the finale was relatively poor. Unlike <I>TNG</I>, <I>DS9</I>'s final season was surprisingly good, but the grand finale seemed a little cheesy to me.

On the topic of hanging finales, I liked the way <I>The Invisible Man</I> and <I>SportsNight</I> left their shows. They were each damn_good shows that didn't have a chance to find their audience before getting canned, but were good enough and had enough fan support to leave a hanging thread ... just in case.

I also really like they way <I>Spin City</I> had Fox leave the show. The way they brought him back for two episodes during sweeps was pathetic and undermined a great exit. Which brings to mind the finale of <I>Family Ties</I>: not one of the greats, but a really good episode.

I agree with das.

My favorite season finale is Newhart. "Emily, you should wear more sweaters" !

Series finale that made me very mad.............

Caroline in the City. I guess they thought it was going to get a fifth season.

Aghama 03-13-02 07:40 PM

The <strike>series</strike> first season finale to Sledgehammer was pretty unique. ;)

I was going to say that Newhart is the most memorable to me. I wouldn't say it was the best though. I spent too much time watching the show for it to be someone's dream. ;)

I was very mad at this one.

Spoiler:
He didn't end up with Winny. This makes me mad. Which is why I enjoy Boy Meets World more (his brother is the star), since he ends up with Topanga. :)

On a side note I need to pull out the tape I have the Newhart finale on and watch it again this weekend.

Was the last episode of Sports Night, the one with the mysterious stranger coming in and saying he was buying the station. Everyone had renewed enthusiasm for working on the the (fictional) show. But there was still uncertainty about how the stranger would run things.

yeah, that was it. unfortunately due to those idiots at abc, we never got to see dan and rebecca or casey and dana finally get together.
