AFI 2001 Awards (TV awards only discussion)

I have no idea if anyone else watches this, or if they will on the west coast, but I'll use the spoiler tags for a while.

Sopranos rules! They got best actor, best actress and best drama for TV!

I was also surprised to see Buffy nominated. It was a good surprise however.

What the hell is Boys in the Band?

Anyway, I thought some of the nomination categories are a little narrow, but I felt very happy to see them echo what I've been saying all year: the three best shows on television are Buffy, The Sopranos, and The West Wing. And if forced to pick a fourth, I'd probably go with Six Feet Under.

And just in case, I'll tag mine as well:
Spoiler:

I am a little let down that Sex and the City didn't snag best comedy, but I guess it depends on your definition of the award. Sex and the City is the best show that falls under the category of "comedy." But Curb Your Enthusiasm is the funniest show on TV, so I'm happy with it winning the award.

Sir Ben Kingsley should have taken two seconds to learn how to properly pronounce Halle Berry's name.

Spoiler:
She did not win Best Actress for Monster's Ball

Good to see Diane Keaton is still a space case whackjob with no grip on reality. Freak.

They must have spent about 6 minutes in pre-production on this show. What a mess.

At least it ended on time

Guess it helps when a bunch of the winners don't show up.

Really surprised that Buffy got nominated. I remember reading a Roger Ebert article about how each nomination got debated before it got on the ballot. So, to get nominated is quite an honor.

Now, I just hope that everyone doesn't think that its a musical show.

It was a great season for Sopranos after what a thought was a dissappointing sophomore season. This show rules.

I turned this snoozefest off after 25 minutes. NOBODY was there to except their award! WTF!? I did manage to catch Andy Garcia stuttering and fumbling through his presentation though while flipping channels. Can the guy even read?

I agree. It was nice to see "The Sopranos" dominate the highly overrated "The West Wing"........

Has this award show been on in the past, or is this a new thing? I only caught a few minutes of it, but I got the distinct impression that nobody really felt like being there. It was almost as if they finally realized that too many award shows makes the word "award" meaningless.

This was the first AFI awards. I agree that there's too many awards shows - the Oscars have been a joke the last couple of years and don't get me started on the Golden Globes...

They would be in for a big surprise indeed. However it may very well be the musical episode that pushed Buffy to get the nomination.
