I had a college teacher last year who fit that perfectly

I doubt Zane will stick around for more than 6 episodes total, but it's funny to hear him use an American accent (first time for me hearing it since he's usually also the British cad).

Although we welcome a pretty woman to the show, I understand why the teachers wanted educated teachers.

Teachers are very frequently undervalued, underminded and under appreciated. The notion that anyone can teach is why teachers pay is so low and why over 50% of teachers don't last more than 5 years in the profession.

Teaching is not simply reciting facts. But it's also comunicating, exciting, perservering, educating, chalenging etc.

To make an analogy....

Sure a lawyer can teach highschool.
Just like a teacher can attempt to fix a broken sink.
It's just that someone who is trained in the task might do it better.

Sure, someone that is trained might do it better. But that doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference. Getting a teaching certificate is no guarantee that one would become a good teacher.

Generally, I find that the college teachers are much better at teaching than high school teachers. No, I'm not talking about their knowledge as this is generally expected. I'm talking about their ABILITY TO TEACH. Ability to explain things in several different ways, ability to read students to gauge how much they understood, ability to motivate students to study, etc.

More than a teaching certificate (the process of getting that is a joke anyway), a dedication/desire to teach is what the teachers need most.

The parenthetical statement here is a good example of one reason why the teachers may have been upset. I think that most people would agree that getting a college degree isn't a joke. And, in every case I'm aware of, becoming certified to teach involves getting at least a BS and often an MS. And, from my experience both as a student and as a coworker, I find that many, many college teachers couldn't teach their way out of a paper bag. One of the reasons for this is that many are not trained to teach, though some are. So, at least on the surface, I would say that the teachers in this case had a valid concern about someone who was not trained trying to do the work.

Note I said on the surface since that's the premise the show used during the "meeting". I wouldn't be at all surprised if there are later interactions that may show us other reasons behind the meeting. Maybe it's just me, but I got the feeling that there was more going on than what was being said.

Note also that even given the teachers valid concern about her abilities, the method they elected to use was pretty immature... just one of the reasons I wonder where this is really going.

I thought that the scene where the teachers are upset because there was a teacher teaching with an emergency cred was terrible. As it was pointed out earlier in this thread, there are many teachers in almost every school system teaching on one of these.

It was a stupid scene and not realistic.

True. There are no guarantees of anything, but when possible, it's nice when the odds are in your favor.

Well, this would be great if it were true. I'm glad you've had this experience, but for the most part, college professors aren't teachers. Their instructors who are experts in a specific field. Many times their primary function is research and teaching students is a secondary requirement to justify having them on campus. I have nothing against college professors ... there's no real need for someone who can reach high school students at that level. The college professor has a significantly easier job (at the instruction level ... not overall), simply because by and large he's instructing students who have most likely paid for his class and specifically registered to take his class likely because it's something they're interested in or pertains directly to their possible career path. No, this isn't always the case, but on the whole, college professors are speaking to people who want to listen.

Absolutely. Few things in this country are as pathetic as the way we treat teachers. There are plenty out there with the dedication/desire of which you speak that just run out of gas fighting the system, spending their own money on supplies, and getting no support from parents or government. The best of the best can keep their perspective and do a great job, but it's an evil environment to work in at times.

I'm not going to take a side in the high school/college argument. As I am "just" an elementary teacher, But can you please tell me how the process of getting a teaching certificate is a joke? We get our 4 year B.A. like the majority of other majors require and we have the honor of getting to pay full tution to do our Student Teaching.

Well in CA you can pass what's called the CBEST and go to work teaching right away, however you still have to get your full credentials on the side, which include a 4 year BA and a buttload of student teaching which you have to pay for.

As for the preg hitch, in most schools in CA this is exactly how it goes. You get knocked up and you go to continuation HS. In my home town this is mostly due to the fact that our continuation high school had a nursery and a parenting class, and if any regular HS tried to setup a nursery on campus there would be hell to pay from the conservatives. Put it on par with condom machines in school bathrooms. Conservatives go ape sh*t. And this is a conservative town, of course they like to masquerade as if they're liberal, but that's a different story. Also, continuation HS is not so bad. In my town it's actually a better school than either of the regular HS'. The teachers there actually care.

So far the comment I'm most in agreement with here is that this show is becoming more and more like Soap. That's ok though because I always loved Soap.
