ALly McBeal 10/29/01
I'm probably the only guy that'll admit that I still watch Ally McBeal. I found the season premiere of Ally to be pretty funny (to me). Having that lawyer with the neck tick when he says words that begin with "c" be a therapist to Ally was a stroke of genius. They introduced quite a few new players in the mix, and they don't totally stick out like a sore thumb.
I guess it comes down to me enjoying the neuroses of the characters, and the rapid fire dialogue. After 4 years, there's still plenty of laughs to mine from the main characters, even if the cast rotates out many of the players every year, perhaps that's why it remain fresher than most comedies in the later years.

I was a bit surprised at how they got rid of quite a few cast members without any explanation. Where is Taye Diggs? Where is James LeGros? Ally's Roomate?

I liked the way they dealt with Larry: "He was just a waste of a year of my life" or something like that.
The roommate is gone (Carson got booted off ER and Ally this year). So is LeGros, and Diggs. Ling will be gone by episode 6 (getting a judgeship).
The only original cast remaining will be Ally, Fish, and Cage.

There were rumours going around that Carson was into the same sort of problems that Robert Downey was into.
As for Taye Diggs and James LeGros, well their characters were going nowhere so I won't miss them. My question is, once Lucy is gone, who is Portia de Rossi going to be paired up with? Portia's character had some very good moments, especially when she was going out with John Cage. But them, her character was just neglected.
Patman, Jane Krakowski is also an original cast member. Speaking of which, she is terrific and I hope they give her something to do this year. She's been wasted.
And I hope we get to see Billy again.
BTW, bringing Robert Downey back isn't totally out of the question.

Of course that's not to say he can't return in visions, dreams, hallucinations, etc.

jj: Well, yes he's quite dead, but that hasn't stopped him from appearing to Ally.
Speaking of cameos, I hope we get to see some characters from the Practice make appearances as well.
