Breaking News: DirecTV Accepts Dish Network's Bid; WWF To Return To DirecTV Users ...
EchoStar, the company that runs the Dish Network, may well become the leading provider of home satellite TV service in the United States after reaching a deal to acquire DirecTV from General Motors Corporation.
Associated Press announced that EchoStar Communications Corporation is buying Hughes Electronics and its DirecTV subsidiary from GM for approximately $25.8 billion. The deal, was concluded Sunday after General Motors's board approved the deal. This occurred after Rupert Murdoch and his News Corporation suddenly withdrew a long-standing offer for Hughes.
With 10 million subscribers, DirecTV is the largest provider of home satellite television service in the U.S. The new company will serve about 17 percent of the pay television market, according to a GM statement.
This change in ownership may benefit wrestling fans that have DirecTV who have lost the ability to receive WWF pay-per-views after the break-off of negotiations between the current management of DirecTV and WWF Entertainment.

If it ever gets approved. I would not get my hopes up.
But EchoStar will have a tough time winning the regulatory battle for Hughes. An EchoStar-Hughes proposal would combine the No. 1 and No. 2 satellite providers, creating a satellite company with 16.7 million subscribers.
Antitrust reviews could lead to long delays before the deal is consummated. The transaction, which is subject to Federal Communications Commission review, is expected to close in the second half of 2002.

Don't look for changes any time soon. Everything is business as usual until the deal gets finalized (and it will IMHO), and the WWF PPV's will remain off Directv until that time OR unless they work out a deal with Directv as it is. Remember, GE agreed to SELL Directv, the government decides if it's okay for Echostar to BUY it after making them jump through the regulatory hoops.
If anyone is waiting to get satellite TV, NOW is the perfect time with Dish's continuing "I Like 9" promo, a good deal in its own right. Charlie Ergen has said time and again that current customers would get free equipment swaps, so whatever you get now will be replaced with next-generation equipment of equal or better functionality - DD5.1 outputs, dual tuners, PVR's (maybe w/TiVo, maybe something else) maybe even HD capability. Also, eliminating redundant programming frees up bandwidth for adding more local channels - as many as 60 more cities' channels in the next couple of years.
