I, for one, will not have this comparison problem b/c I have never watched Buffy nor do I intend to. It is not a rip against any Buffy fans, everyone watches "their" shows for their own reasons. While it doesn't necessarily matter to me, the WB would be wise to try to distance the show from being a blatant Buffy rip-off in order to keep the lead-in audience that Buffy provides for Smallville and keep viewers like das from changing the channel.
I think they have the pieces to do that ... the question will be whether the writing can now achieve that goal. The problem I see is that (granted all this is opinion) 'Buffy' is a level or two above all the knock-off shows that have come after it. Like others have said, many of us want 'Smallville' to be more on the 'Buffy' side than the 'Roswell' side of the teen drama. I don't want to see them distance themselves from 'Buffy' so much as expand on it ... take it to another level.

I guess a possibly very poor analogy would be that I want a Star Trek: The Next Generation ... not a Star Trek: Voyager. TNG took what TOS had done and took it to another level. Voyager simply copied TNG. I'm more than happy to see this show take the 'Buffy' approach and make it better, something that could definitely reside in the Lex/Clark relationship, but I don't want it to be just another clone ... or worse ... another knock-off.

Don't get me wrong. As Lex is written now, he's a good manipulator of people. The trick is to see what he gains from such manipulations. I still don't have a good handle of what a lot of money/power has done to Lex, who was portrayed as a whimp in the 1st episode as a child of 9, but after losing his hair, and being involved in the meteor shower, who knows if that event is what made him be able to shore up his resolve and actually act like a Luthor (devious, power-hungry, always looking for ways to expand his power base, etc). Lex will have to handle Clark on a psychological angle because of his (will be) obvious souped-up physical powers, and I know he'll exploit the moral code that the Kents' raise Clark with to provide dilemnas for Clark to work through while keeping Clark at bay. I'm also assuming that Lex will also figure out that the kryptonite bits makes Clark weak physically (in the comics, Lex wore a ring which had a piece of kryptonite embedded as its stone) and use it when he needs it.

Sure, I think Lex would use "gratitudes" in order to gain favors from people he "helps". It's an old "You wash my back, I'll wash yours" principle, but Lex always extract uncomfortable favors from his "friends". Money and information are instruments that Lex uses to motivate people to do his bidding (even if they aren't aware of it).

One more thing: I don't quite see Clark and Lex making out, sucking face like Angel and Buffy did.

Now, you see, thats not it at all. What makes Buffy cool is that it takes something like 'Boy Builds Robot Girl' and makes it into a heartfelt, humanistic, moving story. The fantasy methodology of how they take on villains/what the villains are is almost always minor compared to the character/human elements- that is what makes the show.

And its already clear that is where Smallville obviously wants to draw from, combing the teen malaise with fantasy action. All I'm saying is, I already have one show that has done that as close to perfection as any show I've seen, so I dont need another. The same way, you fill yourself with pie, so you dont go out looking for cake.
Plus Clark has more cool super powers than Buffy. [/QUOTE] Well, since I guess you prefer the fantasy workings of a show- this is great, making him virtually invulnerable and otherworldy too. I'm sure having him fall into a pit of Kyrptonite every week just so he can get beat up and grounded wont grow boring at all. ***This week, Clark unknowingly gets a rock of Kryptonite stuck in the bottom of his shoe and cant keep up with the other kids on the science museum feild trip! Can he stop the evil curator who wants to use Lana in his new exhibit!***

I'm liking it more and more.
I thought that was a terrible comment. The idea of a fortress of solitude came from Jor-El. Not Jonathan Kent.

I recognize that not everything will hold true to the Superman legend, but it still ticks me off when they change things.

Overall I am liking the show though. I like the fact that he doesnt have all his powers yet. He obviously doesnt have telescopic vision if he is using that telescope in the barn. He was shocked at the fact that he woke up OVER his bed, so he is not able to fly yet.

I especially appreciate the fact that the producers changed the letter/logo on the school letterman jackets. Last week it was a diamond/shield shape with the "S" in the middle of it. Very close to being the original symbol for Supes' uniform. This week it was a plain "S".

I could care less about the music. I dont watch shows for the music. I watch them for the content. I like this content so far.

Am I the only one who couldn't help but think that Clark could pull the best ring-the-doorbell-and-leave-a-flaming-bag-of-dog-poo-on-the-doorstep prank EVER? I mean, when he left the necklace at Lana's door? That guy was -damn- fast.
