Is it neccesary
this is a terrible tragedy but is it necessary that
TNN, TNT, TBS, Turner South show CNN
MTV, VH1 show CBS
Speedvision, Fox Sports show Fox News
ESPN, ESPN2 show ABS
and this is on top of the regular networks/news channels airing the broadcast

PAX has NBC
A local WB affiliate is also gettign coverage from somewhere
FX has FOX
Disney, Cartoon Network, nickelodean are so far regular programming
HGTV, ESPN Classic, Oxygen all have something mentioning the attacks on the screen.
HGTV says they have suspended broadcasting (but still are airng commericals). Oxygen says they are in reruns cuz of the attacks.

I woke up this morning and watched 2 hours of Comedy Central hearing nothing of this tragedy. Had I not changed the channel, I never would have known. This could be the most devastating event in our nation's history. There is a lot of information that needs to be distributed ... who needs blood, where to donate, closings of various buildings, etc. On top of that, there's no certainty that the danger is behind us. Usually, I think the news media overcoverages events, but right now, it's important that all Americans have the information they need.

personally, I can't understand how there could be any channels not on news right now... and I've never felt that way at any other time in my life.
And as I flip over right now, MTV's showing their parent's news (CBS). Good.

TLC (The Learning Channel) is broadcasting news from BBC.
I first learned of the tragedy this morning form BBC America. I have found their coverage to be pretty good. It is interesting to hear a third-party view on the tragedy.

I don't think Nick, Disney, and such should show the tragedy. At the time of it, its mostly kids watching educational programs and such, and to interupt it...well...

The Food Channel is off the air. Rather than showing news they just have a card mentioning they are off the air and some music playing.
This seems kind of unnecessary. I mean if you're not a live station, and you're not showing some type of public service/news, why not just show taped episodes of cooking shows? Can't really see how that would be seen as insensitive.

Also, you have to remember that some of these stations (like MTV) are based out of New York. This attack likely had a direct effect on many staff members at the stations.
Why would a station show reruns of videos and cooking shows that they know no one is going to watch? Probably better to just grab a news channel feed and sent your staff home to be with their families.
I don't think there were many people in the mood yesterday to watch much entertainment...

I think people do need a diversion. The news is important especially with such a tragedy but you don't need to hear the same story told 100 times from every other station.

The thing that always catches me is that the media always blames movies or tv shows for violence that happens in the USA and we most generally have to edit or change something because of this. But now that this tragedy has happened I see nothing but it on the news. Isn't news part of the tv/media? Why is fake violence so shunned upon but reality is so accepted? We can show this over and over and over and over, etc. I can't understand how seeing all these people in total distraught can help us heal as a country. The only thing I see happening with airing this over and over is that many people are becoming more outraged and want to strike out at anyone we can. Just my (possibly stupid) thought.
