Next time I come here, I swear I'm going to see "POLL: Best Star Trek Poll"
And where's Captain Robert April?
Seriously, I voted for Kirk ... why? Because everyone's going to vote for Picard. I have no idea where to begin to compare these two. Best caption? To what or whom? His crew? To Starfleet? To aliens? Picard's the better diplomat. Kirk's gets all the women. Picard's better with children. Kirk's returned from the dead on multiple occasions. Of course Picard will look better, because he had 7 seasons to develop his character. Kirk had 2 seasons and a year's worth of scripts they dug out of the dumpster.
As for the others, I'm sure Sulu would be a great captain, but his exposure is limited. Pike was a whiner. Spock did well, but he never liked the role and quickly went the way of the diplomat and on to Ambassador. Sisko's a great character but a horrible captain. There were too many forces tugging at him. And Janeway? I'm going to forget you mentioned her name.

Ditto what das said. I feel exactly the same way. Although I did accidently fall off of the fence on Picard's side.
Since this thread was posted before das' new thread, follow the link to Mulgrew's reason for STV's bad rep:

James T. all the way. Best seducer, best fighter, best drinkin' buddy, as long as I didn't have to wear a red shirt I'd follow him anywhere. I prefer a sort of piss and vinegar attitude in a commanding officer.

Okay, so we're talking Captains here. Best means best qualified to BE captain. Kirk was too hot-headed and it's a miracle he didn't end up dead (oops...spoke to soon). Spock would still be considering what to do and it's implications on the universe by the time the torpedoes tore the Enterprise to threads, Janeway is WAY too "I'm right and that's that" to be a captain. Sisko...well, he just bored me to tears. Now, the ONE guy that was a great diplomat, kept his cool, and knew how to kick a little ass?
Picard. No question about it. (Plus, doesn't EVERYTHING sound cooler in a british accent?)

As much as I love TOS, I had to go with Picard.
"Let's be sure that history remembers the name Enterprise." You had to love it when he hopped over the rail and took over weapons!

Funny, I've always thought Pike and didn’t fathom he would be on the poll. I always thought it was a strange idea to have a reluctant captain (I guess they did too since they scrapped him and went for the swashbuckling Kirk), plus he's such a tragic figure...I'm just a sucker for that. And, his screen time is limited enough that I can see a lot I like, but likewise brief enough to not really have any complaints.

I seem to remember Worf being captain
of a huge starship in the
ST:TNG episode when Picard kept
skipping back and forth through time
with the Q giving hints about a space anomaly
that grew going backwards in time and
eventually stopped life from being formed
on the Earth.

they scrapped him because the actor's (jeffery hunter I think was his name) wife wanted him to hold out for more money
