I work for a television station, and we are producing a series on Naval warfare & technology... we recorded a narration with an actor already, but my boss hated it, so we are hoping to dump it and record a new narration track with someone else. Who do you think would do a good job? Give me some really good answers... I wanna make the boss happy.

Jones will likely be too much money, and the opinion here is that he is too played out.

I suggested Keith David (who I think is amazing) but my boss doesn't know who he is, and probably wouldn't like him.

Hackman has been tossed about as an idea, but again, will probably be too much money.

How about I rephrase the question: Who would make you more interested in watching, without distracting you with how ubiquitous his voice is, and who also is not a huge star?

The dude who played the drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket. I think his name is R. Lee Ermey. I believe I have heard him narrate something a time or two.

Dale Dye (the guy who plays a military character in every flick he is in)

That was exactly whom I was thinking of before I even saw your post.

You need this guy ...

"In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they did not commit ..."

That's exactly who I thought of as well. He has done a handful of military-type roles.

I was just about to suggest Scot Glenn, along with Ed Harris and Lance Henriksen.

Those would all be great choices, I think. I wonder if Ed would be a little pricey these days, tho...

I had already suggested all three to my bosses... though I think Ed Harris would definitely be way out of our range. Did you know Scott Glenn was a Marine? He also did ads for the Navy, and he narrated a TLC show on the SEALs. I am trying to sell my bosses on him... glad ot see that you all are thinking of the same people as I am.

All three of these were in The Right Stuff! Browsing the imdb on the same film also came up with Sam Shepard, Fred Ward and Dennis Quaid... Ward, at least, has done some good VO work, I think...

How about From The Earth To The Moon? That had a cast of hundreds, many of whom might have a solid VO background and be available cheap. I was thinking, for example, of Nick Searcy, who was also Tom Hanks' FedEx friend in Cast Away and regularly plays military types...

Yeah, my co-worker and I were looking at The Right Stuff at imdb earlier. The thing about this whole mess is that they (bosses) want someone who has *some* name recognition, but is available cheap... tough to think of, ya know? Hey dude, why haven't you said anything to me about the whole personal attack craziness of last night?

I'm not even sure which specific personal attack craziness you mean anymore! I had my own bout of supposedly "going too far" this morning, and almost got the same thread locked again!

At any rate, it's great to share ideas with you, whether we're on the same side of an issue (Thread A) or not (Thread B)...

Yeah, it is pretty funny how in the chicks thread, I was pretty much pulling a Hoppenrath, but in the gay thread, I am *swinging* (guffaw) the other way... Although I think if you look at my posts in the chicks thread you can tell that I am not a total pig... maybe. Heh.
