The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
Kanopy and Hoopla both offer streaming video through libraries. They both operate on a credit per month system to help libraries control costs (as of February 2018, both services allow 5 credits per month per WPL cardholder). However, there are some differences:
https://www.kanopy.com/ The films that truly resonate with us do more than just entertain. They inspire us, enrich us, and challenge our perspectives. Start watching today and expand your worldview with us. https://www.hoopladigital.com/ hoopla is the digital service of Midwest Tape, a leading provider of entertainment media products and services: DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and shelf-ready solutions, to public libraries across North America for over a quarter of a century. Our purpose has always been to partner with libraries in delivering the best content to patrons in the most streamlined manner possible. Through the years, we've cultivated a growing passion for the evolving public library. hoopla digital builds on that passion by providing public libraries of all sizes the ability to offer patrons an enormous selection of digital video (movies and TV shows), music, audiobooks, ebooks and comics to their patrons. For these libraries, we’ve pioneered a unique model that allows patrons to borrow content immediately, removing artificial availability constraints and maximizing the power of digital content and Internet distribution. Technologically, we focus on the latest browser, phone, tablet, and TV products to deliver the best possible experience to our user – our passion – the public library patron. They offer a pretty decent selection of foreign, independent, and documentary films. Kanopy has an agreement with A24 and Criterion. Sometimes they get mainstream stuff pretty quickly. I saw Hotel Artimace is already on Hoopla. |
Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I have both and they're awesome for movies. Kanopy has a shit ton of Criterion, Kino Lorber, and A24 titles. Hoopla has movies, music, audiobooks, comics, and books.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I put the Hoopla app on my phone couple of months ago. I haven't looked too close at films, but I read a relatively new book that had been on my wish list since it came out. Very nice and convenient.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
My library (which is the whole state) only has Overdrive unfortunately. They have movies too.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I run Kanopy and Hoopla via my Apple TV. I also have the apps on my phone.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I recently went to one of my local libraries for the first time in years and noticed the flyer for Hoopla and I signed up for it along with renewing my library card.
It's decent for a free service. There are some things there that I would be interested in seeing. Kanopy seems to have much more, but they're not offered in my area. |
Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I'll have to check these out.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I get Hoopla. They have a great Roku app.
https://channelstore.roku.com/details/196549/hoopla They have most of the classic live action Disney movies. I love watching stuff like North Avenue Irregulars and Candleshoe. They also have some stuff that isn't available on other services, like the original Suspiria. |
Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
Plus, they have A.P.E. With Joanna Kerns. A classic! |
Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I've used Hoopla for books for a couple years now. The Kindle Fire Hoopla app isn't the best but hey, free books to read!

I was happy when they both showed up on my Fire Stick. Pretty cool for free ad-free movies.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
kanopy has a GREAT selection of movies - lots of classics, Criterions and more recent films including a lot of A24's. Watched Ugetsu on there the other night, which I had never seen before.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I got signed up for Kanopy today (for some reason my library doesn’t subscribe, but my grad school library does). Now I’m wondering if it’s even worth checking out the Criterion streaming service. |
Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I watched Mandy on Hoopla. thats the only movie I watched so far, it was dvd equal. Is that what you guys are seeing too ? |
Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
Yea, I’ve had some quality issues with Hoopla. |
Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
It's free and watchable. I'm not gonna bitch about the quality. Some movies are better than others.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
My library isn't part of Kanopy (or however it would be said) and only allows me to borrow 5 titles per month at Hoopla.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I get 9 per month with Hoopla.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I was talking with a Librarian over the weekend and he told me the library pays something like $3 per film watched on Hoopla, which is why his library doesn’t subscribe to Hoopla. |

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
I double-checked with a colleague and you're right about Hoopla. There's a "per use" fee of about $3 per movie. Some library systems out here can cover the cost, so like if you have a library system that subscribes to Hoopla and gives you more than 5 titles per month, well, that's a generally well-funded library/system.

Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
Yeah I can hold 10 items each month. |
Re: The Kanopy and Hoopla Streaming Thread
It seems Torrance Libraries haven't partnered with these as of yet but it's in discussion. But I think My wife has an LA Card.
Hearing that the Libraries have to pay $3 per film on Hoopla made me feel weird. I mean, do they pay anything when they let you borrow discs directly from them? |
