HBO Max -- Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service
It looks like Warner Media and Discovery are in talks to merge. Will HBO Max and Discovery + will combine into one service? https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/16/media...dia/index.html

It feels like Warner is being passed around like the village bicycle.

As to streaming, both partners have recently entered the direct-to-consumer space in significant ways, with Discovery+ and HBO Max. The execs were non-committal as to whether they would combine the services or bundle them as separate products. Zaslav said all options would be explored. “We’ll see over the next few years as we learn more about what consumers want and how they want it,” he said.

I'd expect it to be more like Disney with Disney+ and Hulu. If they combined them that'd be a pretty expensive streamer. In their case, it'll mostly stay the same.

Kind of what I was thinking too. Plus Discovery+ just is so extensive. Adding that stuff would practically overtake HBO Max. A bundle deal for the two services would seem better to me.

I wouldn't be mad if they combined the services.

Discovery + is kind of the posterboy for a streaming service with no identity at all. The subset of people who like to watch nature documentaries and 90 Day Fiance enough to pay for a monthly streaming service has to be pretty small.
Plus HBO has such a strong identity as a premium service that curates the best of the best content, it does seem kind of incompatible with Discovery+ when you think about it.

That is more than I thought. Plus I think Discovery own all this content so it's not like it's an expensive undertaking the way Netflix was when it was paying everyone for their content.

Don't forget the endless supply of HGTV and Food Network shows and the whole Chip and Joanna Gaines thing, and nearly as endless supply of murderer documentaries and profiles.

I subscribe to HBOMax and since it's now my #1 fave streaming service based on it being the place for DC stuff and and I love the TCM content .... I feel it's worth every penny.
that said, I can't wrap my head around paying for Discovery +.

Yeah Discovery still gets paid for the V subs. Just not be full retail amount.

Is Discovery + the one with HGTV stuff? And will this be free with HBO Max?

I guarantee 3D would not be dead if the subscription services had a large number of 3D movies and actually worked with all 3D displays. All the streaming companies that did 3D did it half-assed with awful hardware support- Vudu still has 3D titles but not even the Vudu apps in all 3D displays support it. Discs of course have been priced high and difficult to find, and of course discs are dead anyways.

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service
we were going to dump Comcast and move to Verizon and they were giving us one year of Discovery+ for free. We have our wireless with Verizon but in the end, even with bundling discounts, we were losing too much (HBO max, Peacock for free) and they were not giving us HBO for some reason, in the end when we realized that we were paying for Netflix in the price we had from Comcast it made a lot more sense to stay with Comcast as our bill would have gone up when we paid for Netflix and if we added back HBO max.
At first, I was thinking Discovery+ was the Paramount streaming service and I was mildly excited then I realized it was what it was, and would likely never watch it much like Peacock so far.

Anyone else having issues with the HBOMax app on Roku? Things like the interface freezing as you go through selections, profile screens skipping, etc...

For me, that only happens when the app first comes up and I start navigating right then. If I give it a few moments after the main menu loads up, then it works just fine.

So now it’s official for those who can’t afford the $15 a month for HBO Max. You can get the ad supported tier for a whopping $5 discount

Yeah I don't get the logic there. Probably to bundle with Discovery in the future.
