It was $20 to rent, $25 to buy. VUDU gave a $3 Preorder credit.

Ah, that's what it was. But yeah I probably could have held off if I knew we could watch it for free a month later. :)

So almost 4 weeks later and still no sign of a Roku or Amazon app.

Luckily I have an Apple TV so I can watch it, but we're getting pretty close to the July 31st deadline where HBO Go goes away. Then those guys are screwed because they want to segue all HBO cable subscribers to Max.

Every time this thread gets bumped, I hope it's a Roku app announcement. I really thought it would be worked out in the first week or two. But unfortunately, it seems that HBO is willing to wait it out.

I wasn't able to cancel in time last month. But I'm definitely cancelling before my next billing date.

Insane that they can't get a deal done with Roku. Boggles the mind.

I do think that that deadline will motivate one side or the other to get moving, but it's a game of chicken at this point. We do know that the apps are ready to go the instant they sign that deal.

HBO Go goes away, but HBO Now will still exist right? I mean they're the same thing, so it's not really any sort of a deadline regarding HBO Max.

If you subscribe to HBO through your cable provider or whatever, you have HBO Go (and probably Max) but not HBO Now (I don't think) so not having Go and Max means that they won't be able to watch HBO on their streaming box at all.

Man just typing out that sentence was painful, what a mess in terms of branding.

It was my assumption that getting HBO through your (non-ATT-owned) cable provider would like never give you HBO Max and that was the basic gist of the new service (i.e. the IQ test that they joked about) -- you can get all the HBO content by subscribing to HBO through your cable company, but if you pay that identical $14.99 to HBO directly (and they keep it all), then you can get all the additional Max content for the same price. I don't understand why they keep HBO Now as a "thing" except to allow people who have HBO Max to watch HBO content on a Roku until a deal gets done here. Besides that, it has no reason to exist.

I can only watch HBO Max on my PS4 in my bedroom and ipad. I would really like to watch it on the Roku in the living room. I have HBO through Hulu so I can watch HBO content in my living room, but I would live to be able to watch Max content in there too. Roku must be playing hardball like they did with Fox before the Super Bowl.

But they signed deals with a lot of non ATT providers (but not all). That's why you can sign in with this long list of providers.

Bottom line is if they remove HBO Go from Roku and Fire TV and don't put Max on there, HBO subscribers (who are not Now subscribers) won't be allowed to view their content on either box at all. Neither side wants that.

It’s crazy to me that they still don’t have a deal with Roku or Amazon.

Has anyone seen any reports about the number of subscribers they have a month in now? It’s gotta be waaaaaay down from what Disney+ pulled at their launch.

The DCEU movies that were scheduled to leave will now stay until at least the end of the year.

The others will still rotate out.

I'll probably stick out HBOMax for another month as I'm on a rewatch of the early BBT seasons. I should have picked up the series last month when it was down to $80 on iTunes.

They can count all the HBO Now and HBO Go users that were migrated over as "new" HBO Max subscribers, so their subscriber numbers are likely strong. How many actual new subscriptions over those conversions there are is the bigger question.

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

From Roku today:

Dear Roku Customer,

As you may know, HBO made the decision to discontinue access to HBO GO on nearly all streaming platforms as of July 31, 2020. HBO GO enables cable subscribers to access HBO via the streaming platform of their choosing at no additional cost.

We are disappointed that HBO will no longer give its customers access to HBO GO - and that HBO is taking this action at a time when so many people are at home.

We believe providing an exceptional user experience is paramount and we have asked HBO to reconsider their decision. Unfortunately at this time they are still planning to shut down HBO GO.

Meanwhile our customers can still access HBO in a number of ways across our platform. Existing HBO users that subscribe through Comcast, Charter or AT&T TV can stream HBO on the Comcast Xfinity Stream, Spectrum TV and AT&T TV channels available on the Roku platform. Additionally, if you would like to continue to access HBO on Roku you may subscribe directly to HBO on The Roku Channel.

Regards,

Roku

^I only get HBO Max through my PC with about 8 or 9 (Criterion) movies on my watchlist. I'll likely cancel it by the end of July if there's no sign of an agreement.

Gone with the Wind is back on HBO Max, They added a new intro from a film scholar talking about the movie. They also added a round table discussion about the movie in the extras.

Seems like a cool way to do it. Still in no hurry to rewatch, though.

Yeah, I don’t think there’s a lot to be gained from comparing those numbers. HBO had a large subscriber base already, while D+ brought in a lot of people with the cheap three-year deal.

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

I watched the new intro for Gone with the Wind. Runs about 5-5 1/2 minutes. It's actually a really good and detailed explanation about the movie and portrayals on screen. It plays before the movie and is also separated as an extra.

The round table discussion is about 1 hour long. I'll have to watch that another time when I can make 4 hours to watch the movie. I'm one of those who has never seen this movie.

23 seasons of South Park released on Max, which you'd think they'd make a bigger deal out of but maybe I just haven't been watching ads or anything. They left off 5 episodes with a depiction of the prophet Muhammad.

I noticed last night they now have South Park. I had always planned on watching them since I bailed maybe on season 9 or 10. Alas, one day I may get to them.

And not that it matters, but those episodes that were left off, are they on the season sets that are on blu?

They're on the Blu-rays, they just typically not on any streaming service.

I don't understand why there's not a lot more of this instead of pulling a movie or TV Show. Disney should do this for Song of the South.

Disney did this for their shorts collections in DVD with Leonard Maltin kind of explaining and putting into context some of the more offensive ones. No way they would do that today though.

E Unit 06-29-20 09:48 AM

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

Why not? They even have the material already filmed to explain such things.

Decker 06-29-20 09:57 AM

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

They are notoriously a controversy averse company. Even in the context of WWII, some of those wartime cartoons do not look good to 2020 audience. I think they prefer to keep that stuff in the vault even though I think it has historical value.

E Unit 06-29-20 10:04 AM

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

I think Song of the South was pretty much the line of this type of material is where they tow the line. But you’re right, easier to vault it and forget about it than have to own up and explain it. Wow, so I guess some of our old collections will really have value at some point.

fujishig 06-29-20 12:17 PM

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

Also the audience for Gone with the Wind is much different from Song of the South. I can't see a kid ever coming across Gone with the Wind and being interested enough to watch it, while I could easily see that being the case for the latter.

On a side note, anyone use the kid content stuff for Max? I mentioned it before, but basically you can set a kid's profile. What that does is lock them into that profile unless they have a passcode. Two problems:
1. At least on Xbox, every time you boot up you choose a profile.
2. To get out of the profile, you have to put in a code. The code is displayed on the screen as you type it out. So I guess hide the kids if you want to switch

And their parental filtering leaves a lot to be desired. Under 'kids movies" they have Suicide Squad. I'm sorry, but no.

E Unit 06-29-20 03:16 PM

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

That’s not what the discussion was, comparing those two movies. It was putting those movies on streaming, but backing it with a commentary at the beginning.

Yeah, we’re using the profiles for me and the kids. So far they haven’t strayed past Looney Tunes and my boy watching Batman stuff.

Oh, I know, I'm just saying putting a commentary in the beginning of Song of the South is a lot different, since a kid could easily just see it as a cartoon and fast forward through the boring "educational" part. That's why I brought up the difference in movies and why one might be ok with a commentary and one might now (though obviously as already pointed out Disney has a different threshold for risk AND Disney+ seems to skew a lot younger)
